    Hi Everyone,

This thread is mostly for WinXP fans/IT professionals that don't have time to waste with that thing called 'Vista'.

..and Because Notebook Review has been so good to me in terms of the amount of resources accessible via these forums, I decided to sign up and post something I noticed that might make 'would be' Satellite u305-S5127 purchasers happy.

If anyone has taken a look at both the Tecra M8-ST3094 & Satellite U305-S5127 units, they both have the same 'exact' specifications in terms of it's innards - i.e. the cpu, chipset, lcd, etc. are all the same.

The only differences between the two seem to lie in the satellite u305's extra buttons next to the power button (which are useless in my opinion) - that, and the *OS* :p

So Essentially, the only difference is the OS -> in which case, the drivers would be *More than* interoperable :D

One can easily go to www.toshiba.com and check under technical support -> downloads, and choose the Tecra M8-ST3094 for the drivers, or use the direct link below:

    Have Fun! :)

P.S. In truth, I've been waiting around for a 13" laptop for sometime that had Windows XP support; however with MS's Vista push, it has become somewhat increasingly harder to find new laptops with Windows XP support/drivers. Personally, I would purchase the Tecra M8, however I DO like the purchase security of buying from costco.com (3 month return policy [USA], or 6 months [Canada]) and decided to just get the satellite and load it's tecra twin's drivers :)

Thank you. Most of these work with U305-5107 as well.

    Hey Kris, np.

Since Toshiba is a little skimpy on whether or not there are any differences between the soundcards, modem or LAN adapters throughout the Satellite u300 series - the only difference(s) obvious to myself is the videocards.

..and since I'm not entirely sure if the videocard driver listed in my previous toshiba link covers your specific laptop model; you can actually download the driver directly from intel (who provides the videocards in them).

Just go to the link below:

    http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/intelgm965/sb/CS-025753.htm

Then choose 'Graphics Driver' for the Mobile Intel® GM965 Express Chipset.

After that just choose which version of Windows you want the driver for and you should be all set :)

    Good Luck!

    Hi!

Where did you find your WinXP SATA driver?

I have WinXP PRO SP2, and I can't install it, since I don't have any SATA driver.

    thanks

In the above link I provided to Intel, there's something called the 'Intel Matrix Storage Manager' - I think this may be for the SATA controller..

Eitherway, here's a direct link to the '32-bit Floppy Configuration Utility for Intel® Matrix Storage Manager' - it's suppose to allow you to make a boot disk to be used in a usb floppy disk drive that you'd just attach to your computer:

    http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Det...&OSFullName=Windows* XP Professional&lang=eng

I have yet to actually recieve my u305, so I haven't been able to try this stuff yet; either way test it and let us know how it goes.

Oh, I almost forgot to add - When you guys install Windows XP with these Dual Core (all Dual Core) systems, make sure you go to microsoft's website, and download from the download section the Windows XP Updates for the Dual Core issues - for some reason they don't pop up themselves in the automatic updates (at least they didn't for me when I got my first Core 2 duo last december [patches were released the previous summer]).

Hello Jordan, I'm one of those. But, how about the Sata Controller driver??? Where can I find it? Have you installed XP? How did you did it? Did you use a floppy with sata drivers or you made a CD?

    Tks

This is crazy. So if I get a U305, that mean I have to use Vista and no XP driver support?

Has anyone got all their drivers loaded on the U305 with XP SP2 OS?

We have played with the U305 for the past two days, we have slippedstreamed, loaded matrix from floppy tried many different SATA drivers. The best we can get is a blue screen of death after windows is loaded. I will have to get back to that point so I can get you the exact error if that helps. We have flashed the Bios to the latest one to see if that gave us any new options. Toshiba and intel have been less than helpful. I am half tempted to buy a Tecra with XP just to get restore cd's.

Managed to get XP installed last night. I was getting the blue screen of death when trying to install XP Media Center Edition, but everything went smoothly when I installed an older, XP Home Edition. I had to use the intel Sata driver from usb floppy like everyone else here. Got all the XP drivers from the Canada website. The system flies with a clean XP install.

Hey there, if the SATA drivers can be loaded from a USB Flobby drive, isnt it easier to just load the drivers from a USB flash disk? Please help

I am in the same boat. I bought a U305-S2812 and I get the BSD when I try to load XP, similar to this guys message:

    http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?messageID=129639&tstart=0

Can someone give me a quick tutorial on slipstreaming (for starters what is it?). It would really help if someone could give a cliff notes version of how I can get this thing to boot up at F6.

Also, do I really need to buy a usb floppy or can I just use a thumb drive? I also, don't see how I can boot from any usb device when the only options in the BIOS are CD, HD and LAN. Sorry for the noob questions. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Also has anyone else used nLite and is it necessary to get this boot going?

You don't need a floppy drive. Just a CD burner, to burn a slipstreamed copy with a program called nLite. By the way, a USB thumb drive likely won't work. I believe the XP installer is only designed to read floppies. However, with the slipstreamed copy it's completely unnecessary. If you do it correctly, the installer will recognize the HDD automatically.

This is a good guide with some pictures:

COOL! Thanks a lot dude. You are a HUGE help. One question does nLite mean I do not have to press the F6 button? In other words I can "slipstream" my SATA driver right onto disk and it will recognize my HD?

It's been a while since I did it, but as I recall, if properly slipstreamed, is isn't necessary to press F6. Is should load the driver automatically during the install and find the hard disk.

WOW! Thanks so much! nLIte works GREAT! No F6. Just follow the instruction on that link you provided. THANKS!

A couple of things. I managed to track down most of my drivers and everything important is working fine. But I have a few missing drivers (yellow question marks): Base System Device (3 of them) and Modem Device on High Definition Audio Bus. There are no drivers on Toshiba's web site for these. Any ideas?

I found the drivers for those yellow question marks on the Toshiba Canada web site. Card Reader - Richo-3.51.01

One thing though. I must have customized a little too much because I removed the XP buttons and windows and now I would like to get them back. How do I reload that stuff from the XP disk?

I'm glad you were able to find the drivers :D. If you removed Windows features you now want back with nLite, the easiest option is to make a new disc with nLite. This time I'd suggest either not removing features, or carefully investigating features prior to removal.

Remember you want to make the new nLite disc from your original XP cd, not the one you just made.
