any thoughts let me know =] -
hey, no information for you but I wonder how are you getting on with the U405?
I'm thinking of buying a U400 here in the UK (10H model with T8100, 3GB RAM, etc...) and I will be "downgrading" to XP using the supplied Toshiba disc.
Do they also supply a recovery disc for Vista? (just in case, although it seems unlikely that I'll be doing this..)
Do you have an estimate of the battery life? Toshiba do not seem to be providing this info at the moment -
Sorry, the U405 does not officially support Windows XP. As of last quarter, Toshiba has ceased to support XP on it's current laptops. I also warn you that, according to the Terms and Conditions (the Warranty fineprint), you have officially voided your warranty (Thanks Microsoft!).
Also of note is the fact that as of June 30, 2008, Microsoft itself will no longer market or officially support Windows XP. You'll still be able to install and activate it, but you may find your phone and email support options limited, and you won't be able to buy it after it goes out of stock. -
i've got everything working except the fingerprint reader
i don't need any support =] hehe i've never ever called m-soft with a support ques and its pretty easy to replace parts in laptops so i doubt i'll need toshiba's (i'm sure crappy) service
battery was ~ 3 hrs with full speed proc and full brightness and lots of CD useage so if u need to u can knock the screen down and slow the proc and not use the CD - i'd guesstimate ~4 hours or more (my sis has the laptop out of the country right now)
yes Vista restore/recovery cd pop it in hit ok and in a few hours your system will be back to what it was when u bough tit -
Hey, I'm trying to install XP on my u405 2830, but can't get to shrink the hard drive (to make a dual boot) nor can I get the XP to detect the hard drive during installation (to make it XP only). Did you have any of those problems during installation??? How did you get around those issues?
Thanks!!! -
F2 to get into the bios and set the hard drive to "compatibility mode" not the ACPI or whatever its called. then windows will see it when you boot off the cd -
Great! Thanks a lot.
Ok, I have XP installed, and there are a couple of problems that I still have.
I can't get the audio or the wifi to work.
For the wifi, I tried installing the driver from the toshiba website, and found only that the file under "realtek wifi..." is actually a "synaptics touchpad..." driver and not the wifi.
I also tried the driver from intel (for de 4965 AGN), and still no recognition.
I managed to get the LAN to work with a driver from Marvell-Yukon.
Of course, the fingerprint thing doesn't work either.
So, do you have wifi working????
Thanks for everything. -
I'm having the same problem. Here the deal, I don't think you can put XP on this machine. (1) Toshiba doesn't support (2) Not all the XP drivers are on Toshiba's site. (3) Chipset is the biggest problem.
I installed XP Pro, I tried to install the chipset drivers supplied by Toshiba's website and again from Intels website. But the installation of the driver hangs on "ICH8 Family PCI Express Root Port 6 2849". So the chipset installation never completes under XP pro. Because this installation doesnt complete the computer doesnt reconize the Wifi hardware. So that in turns means I cant install the driver for the wireless adapter. Plus any chipset driver that doesn't complete mean the system could be unstable during its use. So I think this is a dead issue. I think I can safely say this Toshiba Satelitte U405-S2824 does not support Windows XP and we know Toshiba tech support can't help.
If someone happens to get this working I would love to see a response on how you were able to get the chipset working.
Greg -
In the UK they are shipping the Satellite Pro U400 (which i think is essentially the same machine as your U405's?) with a XP downgrade disc included, so I guess there may be some hope of running XP on these machines. I've just ordered my U400 10h model so I should get it on Monday, I not quite decided yet whether to give Vista a go as I haven't used it yet or go to XP, I will definitely be putting Linux on tho.
The UK model spec is at
http://uk.computers.toshiba-europe....ervice=UK&PRODUCT_ID=150573&toshibaShop=false
They are also selling a model that only comes with XP

I will try to help out next week when I get my new toy -
Ok talkie, we'll be waiting for the good news.
Candidog, I just really hope you're wrong. I neeeeeed XP on my machine.
Being honest, I never imagined that there was even the slightest chance of a new laptop not being able to support XP.
bahnstormer, you say you have everything working except the fingerprint reader!!! Come on, tell us how you got the wifi (or chipset) driver! -
Got my new Satellite Pro U400 - 10h (UK version), I've only tried Vista so far and it is working fine (after removing the pre-installed trial this and that...). It came with Vista preinstalled and recovery that works direct from the hard drive and also with an XP pro recovery DVD.
I have just noticed that on the toshiba UK support site there are lots of drivers and utilities available for XP as well as Vista, so you might want to give it a look
http://uk.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/download_drivers_bios.jsp?service=UK
My laptop is listed under Notebooks->Satellite Pro->U Series->U400, i'm not sure if the specs are the same as the US ones but these drivers might be worth a go.
Also I have found a guy who has installed Linux on a U400 (the only one reported so far I think)

Ok. Just went to the support website and there's a new flash BIOS version 2.4
I'll try it later tonight.
talkie, I don't if its too much of a difference, but the Satellite U405 that I have has the 4965AGN wifi (the new technology) while the Sat Pro has the older 3965. I don't know if this is the reason why I can't get the chipset driver to work properly. -
For all the U405/U400 Users that need XP Drivers go http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/su/su_sc_modItemList.jsp?moid=1998680&rpn=PSU41U&ct=DL&BV_SessionID=@@@@0345596095.1212684786@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccccadeefiildehcgfkceghdgngdgnn.0
If the link does not work, go to support.toshiba.com, go to downloads, select model Satellite Pro, U400-S1001X
Enjoy.. It works great on the U405-S2830 -
bahnstormer, i need your help!!!
I have the u405 2824 and have a dual boot setup and all is good but i have three things that i cannot get fixed in the Device Manager with xp and it looks like you figured it out allready.
*The Mass Storage Controller
*Intel(R) ICH8 Family PCI Express Root Port 6 - 2849
*And it does not see my WIFI card which is a Intel 3945, i have the drivers but cannot apply them since it is not seen in the divice amanger.
Can you tell me where you found some of these drivers???
Anyone, Please!!!
THANKS a MILLION -
Well..... FIXED EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!
I have the u405 2824
I found out that if you update the bios to the most recent version to 2.40 it actually fixes the error that you run into with the chipset driver installation which will fix the wifi issues as well.
After you update the bios, then all of the updats that toshiba has for xp on their wesite, will have your up and running with xp with no problems.
I have set up my Lovely Little laptop with a well running dual boot with XP Home and Vista Home Premium.
Love it ALL!!!
Thanks for the help to all the postings that i have found here.
candidog, please disregard the PM. thanks anyways.
Edit: the mass storage driver is the card reader driver.... fyi. -
