Last night before going to bed, when the battery was at 80% I removed the power cable and closed the lid. This morning when I awoke I checked the battery status and it had decreased to 72% in just under 8 hours.

Is this normal and to be expected ?

I know the battery may continue to drain if the laptop is sleeping/hibernating. Try shutting down your laptop and see if your battery still continues to drain.
