I recently bought a satellite a85-s107, I want to be able to burn dvds. I am very interested in the ben q 1640 but have no idea on what I need to buy for it to work as an external drive on my laptop if it is even possible. any help would be much appreciated.
thanks

Ok, I've been researching for a little bit, I know I need a external enclosure but do not know if there are any differences. I do not have a port for firewire so usb2.0 will have to be used. I am going to buy the 1640, does it have lightscribe or is that only the 1620? I still do not know which disks to use. I heard use rw b/c you'll screw up but then - or + R. Please help me out

I believe the only drive that BenQ has with LightScribe technology is the DW1625.
The DW1640 is capable of burning both R/RW media in -/+ formats. It is also capable of burning +R Dual-Layer discs. This drive doesn't have LightScribe.
The type of media to use is completely up to you. Since the drive supports all media types, you should be fine with anyone you choose. Just make sure you pickup a good brand of discs because I bought a spindle of cheap DVD-RW (Princo) discs and it only works like an R media (once you wipe and re-write to disc, it fails to read). Check the web for recommendations on the best discs to use with the drive.

HP makes an external Lightscribe drive can't remember the model number. It is a rebadged BenQ dw1625 which is a pretty good drive. As someone who has owned a lightscribe drive, they are not that great. It took 30 minutes to burn a simple songs list onto the disc. I'd recommend you buy a complete unit as opposed to buying a drive and a case. You'll have someone to yell at if something goes wrong. Some of the usb chipsets in the cases are know to be very flakey.
