Dear nealloy1981-
Unless you are somehow using this forum from your limited cell phone. Please type in full English. Your location shows 'London', so I assume you have command of this language.
There are several ways to activate or deactivate Wi-Fi on your Toshiba notebook. Certainly using the Function Keys is one way.
Another path is to open the Windows Network and Sharing Center, then select Change Adapter Settings from the left-hand menu, and finally right-click on the networking device and select Enable or Disable as desired.
If instead you select Manage Wireless Networks from the left-hand menu, you can directly manipulate your wireless connections.
The fact that you are loosing your connection is most likely because your computer is either too far from the access point, or the access point is using an overlapping frequency with a competing access point. Try moving closer and/or remove objects between your computer and the access point and see what happens.
