Im going to buy the M40 here in a few days, and Im wondering if I should spring for the extended warranty with accident protection. Will the m40 self-destruct over the years? I just dont know ifit is worth it to spring all that money for something that might never happen.

I did end up purchasing the extended warranty on my M45-S351. I purchased the accident protection along with the extended 2nd and 3rd year for 199.00. I thought the screen would be very expensive to replace if there was a problem. The warranty was 100.00 off the regular price and not overly expensive over a three year period. I would not have purchased it if they were not running the special.

If you do opt for the extended service plan, get it from Toshiba and not the retailer. Generally, if a notebook makes it the first year without any problems, it will make it a few more. Hardware issues usually come to light quickly. If it gives you peace of mind it may be worth it. Good Luck.

I agree that if you buy the warranty, definitely buy it from the manufacturer. Toshiba was running specials in the US until March 31.

I'd definitely recommend getting the extended warranty from the manufacturer. Zazonz's partially correct regarding the time frame when most problems popup, but with basic wear and tear you're almost guaranteed to come up with a problem after the standard warranty is up. Things that are beyond your control might happen, ex. plugging and removing the AC plug from the unit might cause the power connector to loosen/break off from the motherboard. This usually requires a new motherboard & labor charges (unless you want to open the unit and solder it yourself). This can easily run you $300 and up for the part alone. Also, just the backlight of your LCD might burn out (just like a standard fluorescent buld, they burn out after a while). This is one of the other expensive items on a notebook. So spending an extra $100-$200 on a saftey net that might save you money in the long run is definitely worth it, for me at least.
