Toshiba repair shop has determined that the screen needs replacing on my 2 1/2 year old Toshiba laptop model M-45. They will do it for $800.00 dollars. They have already replaced the FL-inverter about three weeks before. The first fix fixed the problem but three weeks later the screen went out. My question is this: Is it worth it to buy a screen myself and with my husband and the website posted on this board try and replace it myself? The computer cost me $1200.00. The screen is extra wide. I really like my computer but using it hooked up to a desktop monitor is not my idea of how a laptop is supposed to be used. What do ya'll think?

If you are good at that kind of repair work and the screen doesn't cost too much, then go ahead and try it. Laptops are not the easiest thing to work on, unlike desktops.

I would check on ebay or an LCD screen retailer who sells them really cheap for like 100-200 dollars and do it yourself. I had an old Compaq who's screen went bad and ordered a new screen off ebay for $150 (HP wanted to replace it for $800, YEA RIGHT!) and installed it myself. I found a dissasembly pdf online and did everything myself. It was totally worth it.

Thanks, for the encouragement. My husband is an engineer and is used to working with small parts. Never worked on a laptop before though. I figure what's the worst thing that can happen? We mess up the screen and can't ever use it? Can't use it now. If I can get one for around $200.00 then I think I'll try it.
