Faster for sure but don't remove everything Toshiba-related because some things will stop working

    Could you give specific filenames?

I prefer the careful measured approach to this kind of thing. But then, I hate to have to break out the recovery CD and spend all that time recovering back to where I was, so call me averse. :p Others here are more daring ;)

Suggestion: tread lightly on removing stuff initially. Start by just turning things off. If that works without incident for some span of time (choose your span of time) then it is very likely safe to uninstall.

First thing I always do on a new computer is put a single folder on the desktop and scrape most of that desktop clutter into the folder. Then turn off applications/processes I believe I don't need/want. Then I go back later at my leisure and clean up the stuff truly found to be unneeded.

So the x205 comes with a recovery disc? Does it let you do a clean install of Vista? Or just reinstall programs? Or does it let you reinstall Vista, but still with all the bloatware?

Unfortunately it only restores vista and the included bloatware, I tried doing a clean install with the included recovery dvd and it did not work and it always installed the bloatware.

If you don't have another Vista disk, its just easier to uninstall everything which doesn't say TOSHIBA.
Techincally some of those can be removed as well, but you should remove the TOSHIBA stuff one-at-a-time finding out what it disables.

What I hate about that though is so often programs leave junk behind, or have altered system settings or things. I really wish every company was required to ship with a clean OS disc (or basically clean with just specific drivers if they want to do it that way).

do a search on this board or just google, you will find that you can do a clean install with the Vista "Windows Anytime Upgrade" Disk that should have been included with your Toshiba. What I have learned from this site and others, is that disk actually has every version of Vista on it.

Folks over in the Lenovo Users forum/thread have created a guide to do this on their computers: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=144783. I think with just a little adjustments, this guide could be used for Toshiba's. I am tempted to do this, but since I have been tweaking my X205-S9349 that I just got a couple of weeks ago, it seems to be running fairly quick, and I have managed to decrease both my boot up and shut down times (Boot up from being Completely Off to Password entry=50 seconds, Complete Shut Down=31 seconds).

Oh cool, I didn't realize the anytime upgrade disc was included with the system. That should hopefully make things easier.

ucsdtriton - Thanks for the link!!, I may use the instructions to do a clean install on both my X205 and FZ180E this weekend. I am so glad Toshiba included this disc cause Sony did not have anything like this with their laptops.

Update: Well I did a clean install on my Sony FZ180E using the instructions and it worked great, the only thing I have missing which I knew would happen is the intervideo Blueray WinDVD player application which Sony does not provide as a download on their web site, so to get that I would be forced to do a system restore with all the bloatware and I am not going down that road again!!!.
Oh well maybe I may just buy Power DVD HD version instead of using WinDVD from intervideo.

    Glad I could help!

Somebody should rewrite the Lenova Vista clean install guide for our Toshiba Forum and make it a "sticky", so anyone who has a newer Toshiba can find out how to do a clean install, because bloatware seems to be a pretty common complaint.

As for my X205, I will hold off doing a clean install for now, unless it starts having problems (crossing my fingers that won't be anytime soon).

For whatever reason, whether it's been my minor tweaking [deleting bloatware/cleaning my desktop, deleting Mcafee ware, turning off the Internet Explorer's Phishing Filter, and/or turning off the automatic external monitor check at boot-up (which causes your screen to black out for a second or two during boot-up), etc.] or the computer just learning my habits (maybe the "Turbo" Robson memory/cache is doing it's job), my internet experience is much smoother, boot-up time to password/finger swipe screen is currently down to 45 seconds and complete shutdown only takes 20 seconds flat). Including swiping my finger, I can have my internet homepage up and running in 1 minute.

Is the cache actually on one (or both) of the hard drives rather than being a separate module? I remember reading on here somewhere that it's part of a hybrid hard drive.

Glad to hear that it seems to be working fine even without a clean install! Actually a clean install might be a problem if some of the software you DO want isn't offered separately (like the Toshiba HD-DVD player or stuff like that).

My question for other X205 owners: Do you have a "HD DVD Launcher" AND a "HD DVD Player"?

When I double-click on either icon, it starts the same program/player. I'm thinking of deleting the "Launcher" because it's the smaller "Application" of the two. It seems kinda stupid of Toshiba to do this.

After doing a clean install I just bought the full version of WinDVD and installed that as it will work with any drivers even if they are beta and I get none of the stuter that I got with the Toshiba version of WinDVD player for some stupid reason when not using the toshiba video card drivers and I am using the 163.69 drivers from laptopvideo2go.com and all my HD DVD's play fine without and stuter.

What if you used the Toshiba HD-DVD player but with the current reference drivers from Nvidia.com? I assume that would still work(?)

Yeah it would work if you use the toshiba drivers then the toshiba version of WinDVD should work just fine after a clean install.
