When I start a new documents in MS Word, usually I need to put the pointer to where I want to type the document. From time to time, when I tab the blank document where I want to start, the program automatically insert "8" continuously until I press the space bar. I have no idea how to trigger this issue.

This issue also occurs in power-on login-in screen. It enters asterisk automatically instead of 8. The above two phenomenons happen from time to time, not always.

By the way, I discover that the no key "8" becomes malfunction. I do not believe that is key itself issue since there is no any sign of intermittence before.

I guess by mistake I triggered something to have such issue. It was working correctly for many years. Any idea of cause and fix?

If there is no fix, I would try to recover the system using the 3 recovery cd-roms. I do not remember how to do. Can someone advise me how to accomplish it. Thanks!

More likely it's a hardware issue, but to rule out software; try a bootable DOS stick or Linux distro and see if the issue persists. If so, disconnect and re-insert the keyboard cable. If that fails to make a difference then consider buying a new keyboard.

An intermediate solution is using an external keyboard, making sure not to hit any key on the internal kb at all.
