    Hello everyone,

I have a Toshiba Satellite L30-115 and an ADSL connection. I have a problem with my laptop running Win XP SP2 with AVG anti-virus. Incoming TCP and FTP packets are systematically dropped by either my system or firewall setting. I have tried those tools that rewrite registry entries for the TCP/IP protocol in Windows XP but nothing seems to remedy the situation. Everything that touches TCP fails systematically : My browser tells me that the connection was reset during whatever process, AVG tells me automatic updates fail but 1] I still can successfully ping www.yahoo.fr and weirdest of all, Skype connects correctly (probable because it uses another protocol and also because it's in my firewall's exceptio list). Not here that I only have the native Win XP firewall and no other (The AVG Licence I 've got is only for web, mail and virus protection). Another thing is that the problem persists even when I turn off the firewall or if I play around with the settings.

    Please help.

    Didier

P.S : I have attached ly firewall log file to this post if it might help

I think you will get better luck in the networking section of a general PC forum...... I run XP SP3, AVG, and do lots of FTP with no problems.

My only thought is whether it's wireless or wired connection?????? I've had wireless Router issues that caused wiered problems. Could also be a side effect of your ISP "Packet shaping" to stop bittorent etc

Hello and thanks for the hint.

In fact my livebox proposes both ethernet and wireless connection. As far as my laptop is concerned, I've tried both options but it's the TCP/IP protocol that is not okay. Both wired and wireless connectivity are functionning correctly and I can get to do file sharing operations with my PC without any trouble.

    regards,
    Didier

The best fix for this problem with the least amount of work to me would be to just reformat and restore. A fresh machine is a happy machine anyway. Your problem may have much more to it then we think. That's why a fresh OS is the best option. Once you damage the TCP/IP protocol it is very hard to fix properly... Also not many things damage that protocol without significant damage to other functions.

Indeed that's a good pick, the fact is that I already have backups of my documents and even an acronis image of my laptop...so this is what i'll consider provided the dreaded thing doesn't come back again.

    cheers,
    Didier

Bad news, I only made a bootable Acronis Disk for my laptop and not an image as such. Well anyway, I still can backup my stuff and reinstall the whole thing (in the hope that afterwards the problem will vanish)

    regards,
    Didier
