Ok, first M45 had 2 big scratches in the middle of the screen.
Second seemed to have an internal hardware problem that eventually led to it not booting at all. (see my other post)
Third unit has a scratch from the bottom of the screen almost all the way to the top and light leakage the whole way around the screen.
I've owned a Toshiba in the past and loved both it and their service. But this is RIDICULOUS.
If I wanted a unit with a scratched screen I would buy a used one or an open box special.
They really need to do something with their quality control.
IT'S TERRIBLE AND I'M THROUGH WITH THEM

Yeah, I must admit that the M40 really seems to be a hit and miss for most people. There almost doesn't seem to be anyone that got a perfect unit from the start.
Either they have a problem with quality control as you suggested, or they were too eager to get it out on sale and rounded some corners.
That goes with its price too though. It's pretty packed on features, but lacks on consitency. You seem to have been the unluckiest one of us all though, 3 units and still no luck... Have you checked out if the scratch isn't just some sticky stuff? Because my first unit had a small scratch and it seemed to be just some left out sticky stuff. I could rub part of it just with my finger. But since I returned it, I didn't experiment more than that with it. It wasn't annoying though, it only showed when the screen was turned off and there was a light source coming from my back.

Well, you know, the M45 met my needs and budget perfectly.
I'm EXTREMELY disappointed.
I purchased it at Office Depot, and I must say, they were FANTASTIC through this whole ordeal.
After each problem, they always offered me either a replacement or a FULL refund.
And I learned quite a bit about these LCD's from this.
The unit that had the hardware failure and wouldn't boot had the best screen. Very minimal light leakage and very even brightness.
My last unit with the most scratches had a horrible "milky" look with a black background.
It's really amazing how each of these LCD's look SO MUCH different.
I've been looking at the HP DV4040 and think I'm going to give that one a try.
I really like everything on it a bit better than the Toshiba, but the Toshiba has a little brighter screen I think.
I've only owned IBM and Toshiba laptops, so I'm a bit nervous trying the new brand, but it can't be that much worse than what I've been through. lol
THIS IS INSANE!!!!!! (M45)
