Give me an honest opinion here please.. I recently bought msi gt780r only because msi laptop has superior speaker and have steelseries keyboard. But honestly.. right now, I am on verge to sell this gt780r and get TOSHIBA Qosmio X775-3DV78 coz it seems so nice for price. It has better speaker, 120hz 1080p monitor and comes with bd burner and 3d vision kit. I really don't give a crap about optimus technology coz my gt780r only lasts 2 hours or so unplugged anyway and I am not really impressed with this so called steelseries keyboard. It just feels and works same as all other laptop's crap keyboard with just prettier backlit. 16gb ram is overkill too since I am going to put ssd, not having raid 0 in qqsmio isn't much of deal. How is qqsmio keyboard anyway? Is it somewhat comparable to gt780r's keyboard? at this point, I am so used to my mechnical keyboard on desktop, steelseries keyboard feels like crap on my gt780r. oh, and what's webcam resolution on qqsmio x775? It just says 3d stereoscopic webcam no more details.
p.s. is TOSHIBA Qosmio X775-3DV78 glossy reflective screen or matte?

Hi, I am in sort of the same situation with you - GT780 or X770 series, except that I've not bought the GT780 yet
The way I see this: prices are close between the two, but in favor of X770:
- Keyboard looks much better - layout of keys, and the Windows key is back where it was to be (lower left corner)
- Seems better built, perhaps due it's a Toshiba? ;-)
- Has 3D capability! Should be fun
- Supposed to have Optimus (a plus, not that it is critical), I've read elsewhere that Alienware M17x & this are the only ones with this with GTX560M
What I am concern myself is for Toshiba is:
- It is very new, very few/little review of it, so all the good/bad points are not yet evident
- The X500 series did reportedly have heating problems, not sure about this X770 series... hope not
- The fan noise, how bad is it? I so very hate fan noise, it appears to have "only" one vent - but a very big one
I have yet to see both GT780 & X770 at showroom to touch & feel, and make up my mind. Only then I can feel the typing quality on the Toshiba. I had Toshiba laptops from work and is overall impressed with their good feel & quality. -
I just bought one 2 weeks ago and love it here is a quick review I did from newegg.

The screen is glossy, but I have to say the key-board is the best I have ever used. I also like the back lighting on the key-board and I love how you can turm on and off the finger pad and it lights up too. I put a ssd drive in it the other day and scored 7.3 in WEI.

I game on the laptop but with minimal lighting, I did watch a movie on it the other day and had no problems with the screen. I also own a qosmio x305 that I have had for 3 years now and it still runs like new. I have always liked the build quality of their lap-tops.

I see.. thx for replies. I guess I will just wait and see how it turns out. I really hope I won't have any reflection problems I had with my previous msi laptops. If it doesn't, then, I will be in heaven.
-
Problems fixed by the much cooler GTX 460m/560m card. -
From other reviews, it seems the fan & noise & heat on X770 is very good, hardly any problems... -
okay, I received my x775-3dv78 today. I haven't had time to play around with it yet so I just put it back after checking screen for dead pixel. Lucky for me, screen is perfect. No dead/stuck pixel or white bleech, breeding problem. Anyway, just the way it looks, this laptop is amazing.. It just is beautiful and speaker quality is top notch. Keyboard feels much better than msi gt780r and I love the button for disabling touchpad. I did little bit of typing test and it had great feel to it and there was absolutely no lag or skipping stroke like my gt780r(defected or so they say). This x775 has better look(more stylish), lighter weight, better keyboard(debatable) and speaker than msi gt780r. I love everything about this new toshiba laptop. well.. except one thing. I love 120hz screen and all but this is glossy screen and I see reflection of myself. I loved gt780r screen coz it was matte and didn't have any reflection problem. well.. nothing is perfect I guess.. my msi gt780r is going to be RMA and I will get it back again in 2 weeks or so. So far, my gt780r had lagging and skipping stroke issue on keyboard so my experience with that so called the best laptop keyboard by steelseries was horrible. I will be able to compare it better when I get my gt780r back from RMA but so far, toshiba x775-3dv78 won my heart(minus glossy screen... gahh.. why not matte?). I will get back later after I do more testing..

Glad to hear your overall impressions are positive.

played around a little more with this laptop.. I noticed cpu seems to run a bit too hot.. It reached 89c while playing crysis 2 dx11 enabled, high res texture, 1920x1080p, high setting, 3d stereoscopic mode. Gpu temp seems ok coz it only reached up to 75c. I know i7 2630qm runs a little hot coz it reached 84c even on msi gt780r with ic diamond thermal compound. Still it worries me a little though. Is it ok to leave things like this or should I open up laptop and apply IC thermal compound to cpu?
-
For a gaming laptop this temps are oK. But if you get shut downs i would think about undervolting.
-
I don't get shut down.. I tried fear 3 and star craft 2 and max cpu temp were 82c and 68c for gpu. I think I will just leave it as it is then..

how about upgrading second hdd to Seagate Momentus XT ST95005620AS?
As you all know, qqsmio x775-3dv78's first hdd is that hdd and second one is slow 5400rpm 750gb hdd. If I take second one out and get one more of those and put it in raid 0, will it work? I mean does this laptop's motherboard and bio supports raid 0 good? I was thinking about buying ssd and put it in but ssd is still too small in size and according to review of momentus xt, it's raid 0 speed is pretty close to normal sata 2 hdd. plus, I can sell that second 750gb hdd for $70 or so on ebay and momentus xt is only $99.. so it's like extra $30 for almost double speed upgrade. what do you think? -
I don't think it supports raid. I believe the HM65 chipset isn't raid supported, but the 67 series is (alienware, ASUS, etc..).
I also could be wrong. -
shoot.. no raid on hm65?

Intel HM67 Express Chipset - Overview
Ya, I don't see RAID support, but the HM67 does have RAID. -
mine is installed with intel rapid storage though.. but I didn't see raid option in bio. I will be forced to get ssd instead if it doesn't support raid 0.
Also, which brand of anti glare screen protector is good? This glossy screen is kinda getting on my nerve. I don't see my reflection much on normal use but whenever screen goes black or gaming, movie background goes black, I see myself too clearly.. I wanna eliminate it. I was looking at green onion and view guard brand but reviews of them weren't too positive.. like half of ppl were saying bubble issues. -
I had a look at a display Qosmio X770 few days ago at a local store, impressions:
1. The gray/red material surrounding the keyboard, and the LCD screen are all plastic, not metal. They flex abit when pressed.
2. The 17.3 inch 3D capable screen looks very pleasant, sharp & clear, and is glossy. It also has good viewing angle.
3. The keyboard is abit disappointing in terms of tactile feedback - it just feels dead/worn (maybe it is a display unit, that's why). I had at least 3 Toshiba's before and their keyboard feel is good for lengthy use, but not this Qosmio, in my opinion.
4. There is a single heat exchange setup but the unit is quiet, I can see big heat pipes underneath, and the unit has a back prop-up setup that allows air to get sucked up underneath & pushed out on back-left side. Heat disposal design & noise seems well designed.
5. Sound is much better than useless tiny ones elsewhere as the famed speaker system does seem to do their job.
Overall my own thoughts is: I expected abit more for the almost $2000 top end machine, but felt underwhelmed by the keyboard feel & the use of plastic surrounds (rather than say aluminum). Perhaps this is not for me...
It is time to touch & feel a MSI GT780, for comparison...
