I purchased a Tecra A2 029 only a few days ago and I seemed to have got one from a bad batch. From The first day I used it, I noticed that it would often be a minor lag or pause for a second when moving the mouse. This was more a minor annoyance than anything else , what is more disturbing is that within a couple of days I would get frequent freezes, where i was forced to do a power off of the machine, it would also lock up at various stages, eg at the XP loading screen during login and after login. Being fed up with this, and as I had installed a few programs since this install I decided to do a HDD reimage back to factory using the image on the secret partition of the HDD, this seemed to start ok and the ghost screen would progress happily until about 24 % and sit there for over 20 mins. I rebooted and tried again for a second time but the same problem. I tried once again but this time it wont power on at all !. the power led will come on but thats all, no other sign of life. I pulled out the battery, and A/C and replugged it but nothing!! I am very disappointed about this laptop so far, and will call the shop I purchased, I just want it replaced promptly with a better working unit.

There's a couple things that could be the problem. The memory could be bad, or the CPU is overheating. Usually with a heat issue, the system will start to lock and in most cases just shutdown, but usually you can restart after it cools down. The issue with memory is another problem. I've read about some users who added their own ram into their unit (aftermarket) and it caused system locks and power problems.

If you installed your own aftermarket ram, pull it out and see if it works. If it's a heat issue, if you can get back into the system, try going into the BIOS and see if you have an option to have the fan always running (my old Toshiba does). If the fan doesn't run, this would explain the problems. If none of these fix the problem, it's most likely your system is defective and you should be able to get a replacement without any problems. This is considered DOA and warrants a replacement.

    Good Luck!
