I'm looking at the differences between the A6 and M5 here and it is quite confusing. These specs are according to the spec lists at the Toshiba.ca site:

    Tecra A6: (PTA61C-CV301E)
    Core Duo 1.83 GHz
    100 GB HDD
    DVDRw Super-Multi Drive
    4 hr Battery Life

    Tecra M5: (PTM51C-LV101E)
    Core Duo 1.66 GHz
    80 GB HDD
    CD-Rw / DVD-ROM Drive
    3.5 hr Battery Life

Clearly, the A6 has better specifications and would probably be more costly.

So why is it that the A6 is only $1599.00 whereas the "inferior" M5 is $2099.00? What am I missing here?

No, the A6 has a 14.1" screen at that price according to the Toshiba.ca site.

I believe the major difference in cost is the build quality - the A6 is based off of the M100 Satellite series, whereas the M5 has its own chassis and probably has much better build quality. Still, the A6 isn't bad. What are you going to be doing with your notebook?

Pretty much everything except serious gaming. My criteria and constraints are listed here and some more here.

Maybe they sold out of it. That is one of the higher end configs so perpahs people could custom-order it if they want.

If I'm not mistaken, they are built by different ODMs. The M5 might be built by Toshiba themselves and they have a true Toshiba BIOS. The A6 uses the generic Phoenix BIOS found on most Satellite models and other brands.
