I'm down to the last of my decision. It's between the Toshiba M30, (customized with 1.7 Dothan, 1GB, DVD Multidrive, and will replace harddrive with 60GB Hitachi 7200rpm myself) and the Asus M6MBNE, basically same configuration.

I've got a couple of questions about the Toshiba.

    1) Is there a way to control the volume with the keyboard? How does the volume knob interact with software (and keyboard if it exists) control? For example, if you turn down the volume with software, can you turn it back up with the knob? Do these controls get in each other's way at all?

    2) Audio DJ controls.... In the store, I keep hitting the play button by mistake. Is there a way to turn off these controls completely, so they can't be pressed in error?

    3) Can anyone actually weigh their unit and give what specs they have... like which battery, one memory module or two, etc? I've learned that the weight listed by manufacturers is never accurate. (I bring mine into the post office and use their scale ).

    4) There has been some discussion about the fan but it's still not clear. It sounds like you can set it to run constant low speed. If true, how quiet is this? Is there risk of overheating? If things did heat up more would fan come on stronger automatically? If anyone is knowledgeable about this, it would be great if you could take the time to detail how it works.

Oh the joys of being obsessive!

    Thanks.........Peter

I don't have a Toshiba M30/M35, so I'll only be able to answer question #1.

The answer is yes kind of. If you lower the volume in the OS, you will be able to increase the volume using the knob, but it'll be max volume on the knob minus OS setting. If you set the OS to zero, you won't be able to get any audio to speakers. But, if you lower the OS setting to 50%, you'll only get 50% of your max volume using the knob. This then also answers the second part of question 1. Yes, they will get in each other's way.

Thanks venombite. Sounds like keyboard control is a better way to go since it syncs with software control. I guess the volume control is good if you want to use the audio dj when the system is off, but I don't.

Still looking for answers to the other queries for those generous enough.

    Pstrisik,

Where did you hear about making the fun run constantly at low speed? I have an m35 and the fan is almost always on at full blast (very noisy) when CPU setting is fixed.

Please advise if you know something I should know.

    Thank you.

    Regards,

    Jordi

Sorry Jordi, I don't know exactly where I read that. It was either in this forum or in another Toshiba forum:
