Dear experts![]()
I have just bought Toshiba Satellite M70-148 in Belgium. I know that there are many posts of questions of random beeping with the solution of wrong MB..
However I observe something different (I guess) - from the moment when I plug the notebook to the wall there is faint high pitch sound (or tone) that lasts until I plug it off. No random beeps, just the faint continuous tone.
It comes from within the area of left speaker (but not directly from it I think), very close to the LED diodes (plug/battery/disk/ etc.. you know). I think it is not related to MB, because it starts immediately when I plug the notebook in, just when the diodes show up, even before I turn on the system with the start button.. I even had the impression that it has something to do with bad shielding of electromagnetic field near diodes (does anything like that exist anyway?)
Firstly I did not notice it, it is very faint, but as far I discovered it, I hear it all the time.. and my girl as well, so this eliminates any ear problems. It is really annoying after a short while. The only moments when the sound stops, is when the CD disk is being read or when fans are at max. for a while - maybe the mechanical waves created by the CD drive/ fans cancel something that makes that high pitch sound.. but I don't really know what is the problem at all..
Does anyone of you observed such sound? I don't think it's the normal behaviour of the LED's or speakers or anything else.. Should I go straight to shop and return it, or is there something which may eliminate this sound? The thing is that except that problem, everything works fine.. I don't really want to worry about another example they will provide me after, but if you tell me that it is not ok, I will go.
Thank you very much for any information,
Best regards,
Tom

Yes, my M70 has this "problem" too. However I don't find it annoying at all, and I'm usually very picky about these things.
Some electronic boards make this kind of noise, I don't think it's something to worry about (from a technical point of view). -
It's the MOBO - if you start noticing anything strange about your notebook (unexplained shut-downs, system crashes, etc.) I'd contact tech support and see if you could have it replaced.

Hi!
I have exctly the same problem with mine and it's REALLY anoying. I got a f5e from futureshop, and I bought it a week ago so I can have a replacement unit. Waht did you do with yours?
thanks! -
Hi,
I have the same problem too with my new Satellite Pro M70
and I agree it is very annoying.
The notebook is under guarantee.
Did you bring yours in Toshiba?
Did they solve the problem?
thanks -
Hi all,
I went to the store where I bought it and turned it on in front of the technicians in the store. Of course they didn't hear anything. I did, but that was a word of a "guy from the street" against "the" technician. He noted that it's a fan: "Fast notebooks have fans, you know..."
Geee, thanks buddy, now I understand..
After 30 minutes I felt like a genuine idiot so I took the lappy and went away..
Anyhow, they were a bit polite and offered me another laptop. Unfortunatelly they didn't have the same model (not even the close one, like M70-147 or so, with similar parameters), so I kept the old one.
From that moment I did not do anything with it. Not because of the "fans" (...). Yes sound is still annoying, but I don't want neither to risk the toshiba service professionalism (as I heard how it is here in Belgium), nor I have a time to wait 2-3 weeks until they examine the problem and return the lappy with "new fans"
For the forums blaming MOBO - I have it since mid February, working every day with it and everything is OK, nothing got worse, neither the beeping, no crashing.. holds really stable.
For sure I would love to get rid of that problem and I will go to toshiba when I'll have time ( I have 2 yrs of guarantee), but at the moment I really can't afford it.
But I can advise you that when you go to toshiba or back to store where you bought it, please insist on the examinig your laptop in the quiet room. They will most likely not hear anything in the crowdy shopping area.
Wish you all good luck and more professional service than I had.
Please let me know how it worked, I would be very interested in the way how you managed to go through it.
Cheers,
Tom
