Hi folks, I only have a couple words, DO NOT PURCHASE toshiba.. they like to ship 3000$ laptops with mat****a dvd-ram drives that are pieces of CRAP. I have the 5205-S705 a 2800$ laptop and the dvd-ram drive WILL NOT read its own burned cd-r's.
I am so tired of toshiba, i've had problems up the bahoola with them. But then again, I did purchase one of their flawed systems. never again. oh and did i mention that for a 2800$ i'd think they'd give me a better optical drive than one that is EXTREMELY picky about the DVD-r media you feed it.

ouch, sorry to hear of your problems [V]

when spending $2500+ you certainly would expect top of the line equipment that actually *works*

I've got the same notebook and am experiencing the same problem, and more. It overheats like you wouldn't believe, keeps stopping every 5 minutes when I play a DVD (original, not burned), and won't recognize CDs of any kind unless it's in a really good mood. Are there any resources out there for this crapburger? Toshiba's website certainly isn't helpful.

Is it just this model or the company in general? I've been looking at the M2 and the reviews have been pretty good so far.

No, it's not the company. While Toshiba's notebooks haven't been as industry leading as they were a few years ago, we're not hearing of repeated disaters.

Your dvd-r drive issue is actually well documented 2 months ago. If you go to toshiba's http://sdd.toshiba.com/cda/main.aspx?Path=/818200000007000000010000659800001516/818200000111000000010000659c000003c7/8182000006d4000000010000659c0000154c site, there is a new firmware that you can download to fix the problem. I've tried it and it works.
