I'm looking to get into my first Toshiba laptop. I've heard good things about them and was wondering about their 6100 model. Anyone have any info on this?
Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated as well. Looking to spend less than $1,500.00
Thanks!

Hangfire,
This is a very old model. It's the Toshiba Satellite Pro 6100, it was out in 2002. I did find a review on this unit in Google.

I'm gonna assue that you're in the US. What will you be using this notebook for? Gaming, internet, graphics, DVD's, etc...? Also, what features are you looking for in the unit, large HDD, LCD size, DVD Burner, weight, size, etc...? There are a lot of units from Toshiba that would fall into your price range. Here's a link to the Toshiba.com website with their currentl models & MSRP prices.

A good starter unit in the Toshiba line is the Satellite A series. It has the basic features that will get you computing in no time. Then it starts to advance to the Satellite M series which is their slim & portable notebook with a 15.4" Widescreen LCD & then the Satellite P series which is their multimedia line with TV Tuners & remote controls.
If none of these Satellite series peaks your interest, they also have the a buisness line called the Tecra. The designs are a bit plainer (have you seen an executive walk into a meeting with a super snazzy notebook? Probably not) than the Satellites but still functional, but the prices start to go up in this line.
There are also a lot of other brands in the market that may have something that fits your needs/wants. I'd recommend looking through some of the forums and see whatelse may peak your interests.

Thanks for the info Venombite, I'm new to the Toshiba laptops. I've heard good things about them but know nothing about them. I've got an HP pavilion zt1175 but it's too heavy, slow, and cumbersome for my line of work. I'll check out your links, thanks again!

6100s are OK. We use them at work. Nice screen, P4M and GF4MXGo GPUs. I was stuck in an airport once and bought PCgamer and played demos all night (lots of free wall plugs in the airport).
Should be way less than $1000 now. I would expect to pay about $800 CDN for one.
One thing to keep in mind, the GPU (or related connector of some sort) is not soldered to the mobo, and this connector tends to pop out. When this happens you get no video. You have to press down on the lower part of the keyboard to re-seat it. The Tosh tech told us there was a shim made to correct the problem, but it does not work. He said this is a very common problem.
I use for for sales demos and presentations. Works fine.

Yes, I've used it and recommend it whole heartedly.
Is a tough notebook (kept going after a couple of bicycle stacks!) and performs well.
The Toshiba utilities are good and the keyboard is good to work with.
It comes with a trackpoint mouse which is good for short term use - I get a sore finger over longer use (a full day). I hate the trackpads however, so I make sure I carry a travel mouse.

Hangfire, I hope I'm not too late...
Before you pull the trigger on the 6100, you should know that this is one of the most troublesome computers produced by Toshiba, if not the entire industry. I know because I'm typing this message on a 6100 that has had all the boards and hdd replaced twice. The IT folks at my company generally consider the 6100s out in the field to be "cursed."
There are a couple of theories as to why these computers are so bad. Some say it's because Toshiba farmed the design work out to a 3rd party (something they rarely do). Other claim the case design doesn't allow components to cool adequately. All I know is that I'm on pins and needles waiting for the next failure, and hoping it doesn't occur right before a deadline!
Don't misunderstand me. I like Toshibas on the whole -- they make fine products. The 6100 has a great display and lots of horsepower. It's just notoriously unreliable. If you want a 2nd, 3rd or 4th opinion, visit the laptop computing forums on compuserve:

Good luck with your notebook purchase!!
