Update: Solved! In poking around the web, I learned that the volume control is on the front edge of the notebook. Posting this update in case anyone else is having this problem.

I have looked at every setting I can think of and I have no sound at all in this computer. It's not like anything has changed. I have had this laptop for 3 months and have already wiped the hard drive and reinstalled everything. Overall I'm not too happy with it; the problems I have with it seem to be so difficult to solve. I'd love it if this were an easy one.

Ideas anyone? There must be settings for me to check that I'm not aware of.
    Thanks.

can you hear sound if you put in head phones? and you are sure you have all the audio drivers installed?

Headphones? I'll have to look around to see if I have some. And as for the audio drivers, I didn't change anything. Here's what's there:
Device Manager > Sound, video and game controllers:
    Audio codecs
    Legacy Audio Drivers
    Legacy Video Capture Devices
Media Control Devices Realtek High Definition Audio
    Video Codecs

All have a little round icon (magaphone?) next to them, none seem to show that there's a problem. When I looked in the Control Panel, I checked all the Sounds, Speech and Audio Devices, and nothing is set at Mute; all are set at medium to medium-high.

Anywhere else to look or check? Thanks!

you might want to check the toshiba website for audio driver updates. if it doesn't play sound through headphones, that would be an indication that the sound card is busted.
