I have a Toshiba A135-S4527 laptop that goes blank after I logon to an account. The screen is black with the curser arrow displayed. The arrow is responsive to the touchpad. The laptop is running MS Vista Home edition.
Any suggestions?

Try rebooting, then after the BIOS posts, IMMEDIATELY press F8 to get to Windows Startup Options. Now choose Safe mode with networking, and see if it can log-in. If so, look at what software has been installed/updated recently. Usually when Vista sits for so long trying to Login, and nothing happens, it will tell you that it can't build your desktop back, and you might have to recover or start new again. All your programs and documents will be the same, but your desktop icons/wallpaper will not be the same.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I still get the blank screen, even in safe mode. In the top corners it says "Safe Mode", but the screen is still black with the curser arrow showing, nothing else happens.

This laptop has Vista Home Premium running and after logging in addition to :Safe Mode" in the four corners of the screen, a Banner says, "Microsoft (R) Windows (R) (Build 6001: Service Pack 1)" Does this need to be updated?

Actually you're missing Service Pack 2. Can you try the startup options again and see if you can try "last known good configuration". If you can get to your desktop that way, run windows update ASAP.
EDIT: But the banner is normal in safe-mode. -
The same thing is happening. After I login, the screen fades to black with the curser arrow showing.
