I've Toshiba A215-S7422 with vista32 working like a good horse for the last 6 years. I didn't like Vista with all known memory usage etc. So I decided to update Windows7 recently, in fact my nephew did. Unwittingly, he also downloaded all the drivers and tried to update from "windows",and boom it failed. I restarted and it is black screen. power is on and fans rotating. It is brick now. I suspect it is BIOS update, as many people experienced that I read on the forums here and else where. Here is what I did multiple ways and so far it did not work. The laptop cd drive has issue that it spins and spins and does not read. So updating from CD rom did not work. Updating om USB is the only option I have. I have usb flash(1g, 2g etc) or external usb cd rom. No usb floppy.
I also have another hp laptop with vista32 and used it to burn the usb with the files below. I followed process, put in usb, pressed FN f key all through out, removed battery, ac in, power on. USB churned, waited 10 min. No beeps or blinks. Put in battery back, ac in and restarted. Still black screen. Repated steps FN b, W f or b keys, they didn't even have usb recognized.
I tried FN <f> key and it seems worked as the external drive recognized but nothing happened. either usb flash or usb rom. How do I make the laptop recognize the usb to boot from?
Here is what I did:
While going through ASPI 2.0 flash and read file, it suggests to update either using external floppy(I don't have), external cd or regular cd rom, or windows.
1. Using safgv200 from toshiba, I extracted files. It has phlash16 and m10a200.rom. I made external usb flash bootable with hp format tool 2.2.3 and files command, io and ms.dos and copied the phlash16 and renamed rom file to bios.wph. The bat file has flash command. Did not work on usb flash.
2. in stead of the dos files, I also tried kernel.sys, command.com and copied the flash files, phlash 16. Did not work.
3. I searched here and elsewhere and downloaded also Phoenix recovery that has wincris.exe, crisdiskbat file etc. Ran wincris on vista32 os with compatibility to xp. Does not recognize flash drive. Changed map drive from F to A as bat file only takes A or B, but it does not make the usb bootable. Get error can't create boot partition and usb not readable at the end, though it did format and copied all the files.
4. Burned cd rom and tried. The cd is recognized but didnot work as cd rom drive is damaged.
I have option now only with external usb flash or external usb cd drive. Any folks can provide sane advice how I can make this damn thing to boot from?
wincris1.0.0.4 supposed to make usb FLASH drive bootable for crisis disk. Can it work on Vista32? I don't have xp or win7.
Thanks a lot!!! HNY.
