    Hi:

    I'm thinking of buying a laptop and thought I'd ask for your advice. I'm a student with a low budget, so I've been thinking about buying a second hand laptop.

    I've run into a few offers and those I've found more convincing are a Toshiba A35-S159 (P4, 2.3ghz, 512mb, 60gb, DVD/CD-RW) for US$950, and a Toshiba 5205-S503 (P4, 2.0ghz, 512mb, 40gb, DVD/CD-RW) for US$1150. They are both second hand.

    I also found a Toshiba M35X-S161 (Celeron, 1.3ghz, 526mb, 60gb, DVD/CD-RW) for US$1300. This one is new, but I haven“t considered it much because find it a little expensive.

    I would use it mainly for word processing and research software, such as SPSS or AtlasTI. I don't really care that much about other features.

    I'm really ignorant in these matters, so any advice will be very much appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Camilo

    A used IBM Thinkpad might not be a bad choice. They are very well built notebooks. You might be able to pick up on ebay although you may have trouble getting it shipped. A lot of people on ebay will not ship internationally. For around $500 you could get a T22 with 800Mhz CPU, 128MB of memory, 20GB hard drive and Windows 2000 or 98. If all you are doing is office and surfing you don't need more. Not sure how CPU intensive SPSS or AtlasTI is. Good Luck.

    I know things, things that could get me killed

    Thinkpad T41:
    * 1.6Ghz Pentium M * 768Mb Memory * 40Gb Hitachi 7200RPM * Panasonic UJ-845-B DVD+RW *
