I have been looking at this computer:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9371556&type=product&id=1218093379440
What do you think, I only be surfing the net and playing World of Warcraft. Boy, I'm going to miss my Mac.

Hey man i'm sorry to hear about your computer. Scammers suck and I've had to deal with them too. Best of luck.
That Toshiba you are looking at, I was looking at that one too and then i came across this one.

You might be getting a smaller Hard Drive but a better GPU. -
Is the screen on the Toshiba from Newegg LED? The one from Best Buy is.
-
It seems to be a good deal. An affordable price for decent stuff, you get what you pay for. I have no clue on reliability of that model though due to the fact we didn't bring it yet in europe and haven't seen any at the service or the showroom of the local sole agent here.
-
It is sad to hear about your problem with scammers.
Reliability and build quality could be the potential issues with Toshiba A505. I would suggest that you google for more user reviews if possible. -
I would like to hear some comments from someone that OWN this computer, because I am in thinking to buy this Laptop. Im still not sure in buying this
Thanks alot... -
I just bought the same Toshiba from Best Buy last night. It will be coming in within the week. I will be sure to inform you about it once it comes in.
I did some research myself and found that professional reviewers have been giving 4/5, while users have been rating it around 4.5-5/5
hope that helps, and I will be sure to repost once i get it

I already have this laptop and its awesome looks good, Good perfromance and its never gets hot even when gaming but one gripe about it all of this bloatware that toshiba preinstalled but a clean install of vista will fix that
and oh yeah check out this thread of how well some games like GTAIV run on it

Get the A505-6969 from newegg instead. It's slightly more ($50) but it has a much better graphics card.
Hmm, I don't think it has an LED screen:

The 6969 model does not have the backlit keyboard but you can order it from Toshiba's spare parts supplier. It is $90 shipped. You can also upgrade to 12 cell battery. The keyboard is very simple to replace, there is a plastic trim piece that covers the keyboard screws, takes about 5 minutes.
-
Yep, you are right the 6969 model does not have the led backlit screen, it is tft lcd.

Yeah but after looking at the specs at Toshiba I've noticed a couple other things. It doesn't have the LED screen, and it doesn't have the slot load DVD player. The battery is 4000mAh rather than 4500 (not sure how much that matters). I think I'd probably still lean towards the newegg model, if I were a gamer though... the DVD / battery wouldn't mean that much to me. I'm not sure how much of a difference the screen makes though.
LCDs can be a wear item on a laptop. I've had to replace a couple. If the look of the screen is about as good I bet replacing a TFT would be cheaper. I don't know, it's a toss up... -
So far the BB model is the only one I can find with the LED backlight display.

I own this laptop and it totally rocks! I'm surprised at the low price but the laptop delivers quite well. Would have expected to pay at least $150-$250 more.
As for Toshiba as a brand, I have had several Toshibas with some of the companies that I have worked for and known others with their brand. Each instance, the laptop has been rock solid. One company I had worked for deployed about 500 toshibas at one time and were still going strong after 3 years. Sadly, that company I had worked for went under but I'm sure FDIC is enjoying those laptops
Anyway, I agree that you should check out others for feedback and check this one out at a BB store and see if you like it.
This one has my vote (runs nice and cool too) -
Nice little Story
And me too! Gotta put my +1 on this laptop

Hey everyone. I'm seriously considering this laptop, as the price is good, and it has a dedicated Graphics card. Do you think this would be enough to process AVCHD video? I just recently bought a Sony HD Camcorder, and my current laptop (a 5 year old HP DV1000) just cannot handle processing it. I've been looking for another laptop under the 800 range, but was starting to resign to the fact that I wouldn't be able to get one with a dedicated graphics card for processing the video, and would have to settle for a desktop. Then, I came across this. The price is good. The features are good. Plenty of hard drive space. Just wondering if the specs are enough?
Thoughts?
Thanks! -
well, im sure it can because it is a 64 bit processor Core 2 Duo with 4Gb RAM. I doubt it'll have problem with all those processes with AVCHD. Uhh and do consider the 512mb DDR3 dedicated GPU.

This computer rocks!1 I have had mine for a few days, and im loving it. It should be able to handle an HD video recorder, considering that it has an HD graphics card. The price is perferfect, a great deal. I got mine at Best Buy, so I had the omptimization for 40 extra bucks. The internet is fast. The one minor downside is that it takes a minute to fully boot-up.
This is a great computer, and I definately recommend it.
PS, the main use for mine is gaming, entertainment, and internet. -
What about battery life? Can some of you that have this laptop model report on how long the 6-cell battery is lasting for you with it. I just read some absolutely horrible reviews of the 6-cell over on the Toshiba store web-site. They are talking maybe less than an hour for various models of Toshibas. I just picked this laptop up at Best Buy tonight, but need to know if the battery life is really bad or not before I actually open the box, which if opened would mean I'd be out about $105 (15% restock) if I have to return it. The laptop looks very solid, but now I'm worried about the battery not lasting long enough. So, how long is it lasting for you?
-
I use mine always plugged up, sorry I couldn't help you out. Best Buy told me that it last around 2.5 hours, that is probably in "Eco-Mode" though.
-
I haven't used mine unplugged, but you can get battery upgrades from the toshiba website. Even better, you get 15% off with a coupon that come with the computer
thats what I suggest you do -
http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/adet.to?poid=435194
here's the link for the batteries on the Toshiba website. -
I got mine from Best Buy, but as for battery life, you can change the brightness settings of each type, and I have mine set at minimum brightness (it's still PLENTY bright!) for Eco mode I'm getting about 3 hours of battery life...but I still don't know the difference between eco mode and powersaver.
-
Bought mine from Best Buy 5 days ago and have experimented some with different power modes.
With everything set full performance (brightest screen setting, video settings, etc) and the 6 cell standard battery that comes with it, I get about 1.25-1.75 hours while watching video streamed from hulu or playing a game.
Using more of a 'power-saver' mode, screen brightness halved (which is still really visible, could probably lower it even more and get away with it) and whatever else is set using the power saver mode in Win 7, I get about 2.25-2.5 while streaming video over hulu.
I'm not really sure what Eco mode is good for yet, haven't messed with it.
So to conclude, battery life (with the standard 6 cell) is not a reason you'd want to buy this laptop
Frankly, it kind of sucks, but is still useable for non-extended periods of time.
Mostly, I just keep it plugged in.... -
Just Toshiba's crazy ideas! LOL
-
You might want to check the specs for the software you plan on using to edit your AVCHD video. Some require a high speed quad core and video card to edit 1080p AVCHD.
-
Best Buy has this model for 729.99 in Sunday's ad. So those of you that bought it within the past 30 days might could get a price reduction.
