For anyone out there that owns an A665-XXX, just wanted to let others know that I just upgraded the stock Hitachi 500 gb 5400 rpm hd to a 500 gb Seagate Momentus XT hd. For those of you that don't know, the Momentus XT is a hybrid drive: 500 gb 7200 rpm + 4 gb of flash memory.

I highly recommend this upgrade. The A665 feels like a brand new computer after the upgrade. It boots up about 5 to 10 sec quicker and overall performance is much snappier and very close to SSD type speeds. For example, web pages now open up almost instantly. The only con is that hd vibration has slightly increased.

A couple tips to those of you that plan on upgrading: 1. Seagate has free software on their website (Disc Wizard) that will help clone your existing hard drive. However, you still need to buy a USB to SATA adapter or a hard disk dock 2. Make sure you turn off any power saving features (monitor, hard disk, etc.) before you clone your hd or else your computer will go to sleep during the cloning process.

    Cheers

Personally I think Seagate should've done hybrid at 5400 RPM to minimize noise level. It's already fast due to the cache, but I've disliked how noisy it is (even comparing to other 7200 brands).
Also they should've done write caching, not just read caching.

Believe me, Seagate is about the last brand of hd that I would buy. However, they have an innovative product for a reasonable price. I just couldn't stand the poor performance of the stock Hitachi HD. It was a sin to match that drive to a core i7 processor. Compared to the stock Hitachi, the Momentus XT is actually quieter. The annoying chatter every few seconds is gone.

Yeah, it's a pretty decent option for laptops with single HDD bay. Hopefully more HDD manufacturers will follow suit. Actually Samsung did the same before, but it was a failure (due to poor execution I presume).

Don't defrag the drive very often or you blow away the whole point of the small SSD portion. Also, it'll make annoying BZZT_BEEP sounds while running as it tries to fight with power saver mode of toshiba laptops. The firmware didn't help. I bought then returned mine......
