    Toshiba Satellite P200 notebook computer.

I have a Toshiba laptop with a 'Toshiba DVDW/HD SD-L802B ATA Device' which is not working.

When I go into device manager it has a yellow exclamation mark next to it, and it gives me a message that 'The device cannot start (Code 10)'.

I've tried using my Registry Mechanic software, reinstalling an updated driver etc. Still doesn't work. I had the same problem before in my old laptop and I fixed it by deleting some files in my device manager, but I am not sure what to do with this one.

    This computer has Vista 32bit.

    Help!

Did you try deleting the ide drivers? Windows will re-install them when re-booted.

Has it always been this way?

I have the same problem on my brand new x200 with
    Toshiba dvdw/hd sd-l802b ata drive.
"Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. the driver may be corrupted or missing.(code 39)"
Drive worked for a day then could not read cd/dvd.
I have tried re-installing and checked for new drivers.
Any ideas without sending laptop back?

    1. Can you boot from the optical drive? If yes, then it is a Windows configuration problem, if no then the optical drive has a problem.

    If yes,

    1. Uninstall the IDE channel (IDE ATA/ATAPI controller) which has the current transfer rate of UDMA 2 or PIO. Then let Windows redetect the hardware.

And if that doesn't fix it:

    2. Have a look at this Microsoft article.

Find a bootable disk (Windows installation / recovery / Linux Live CD) and put it in the optical drive. Use the HW Setup program to set the optical drive as the first boot device. Then restart the computer.

An alternative to using HW Setup is (if the R500 manual I am looking at is typical of Toshiba notebooks) hold down the C key while the computer is booting.
