I have a L675-S7016 laptop that the hard drive failed. I purchased a new Toshiba hard drive Model # HDDR500102X,

and installed it in my laptop. Then I purchased the recovery media disks. My problem is, When I put the 1st recovery disk in, it loads, I get the "starting Windows" icon, and the it stops. I have a black screen, and a mouse arrow that does move with the mouse. After a minute or two, I get a message that says " windows has encountered a problem communicating with a device connected to your computer" Then down below it says "unexpected I/O error has occured" Do I need to change something in the BIOS to continue to install the OS? Am I having the issue with the newer hard drive problem(advanced format drive)I've read about? Please, can some one help me? I would be humbly grateful.......

I've given this a lot of thought and can't pin down the cause. If it is an advanced format drive and an older version of Windows then you may need to load a special driver when it says "press F6 to load driver" early in the Windows installation. Toshiba's support site should tell you what do do.

Thanks John. I looked at that, and apparently it's for Intel processors. I have AMD. Also running windows 7.

This won't be the first time it happens. Mine just blew through it's 3 hard drive in less than 18 months. There is something wrong mechanically in the design of this model, and is quite disturbing. This is the 3rd laptop I've purchased from Toshiba and will be the last as they take no reponsibility for an obviously defunt product. If you Google it, you'll see this is a problem across the board with this model. Toshiba needs to give replacements to it's customers as I did not pay over $800 for a laptop that requires a $300 hard drive every six months.

Are you excessively moving around with the laptop while in use? That could cause a failing harddrive.

Also, keeping fans/vents clean will prevent the harddrive from overheating.

Nope, unless i'm traveling,(at which point it's off until I reach my destination and find a surface to use it on) it sits on my desk on a chill mat. Toshiba has not been able to provide me a reason for the failures, or maybe just wouldn't, i'm not sure. But every failure has literally been that one day it runs great, the next day at boot up I get a black screen with a fatal error message. I am beyond disappointed in Toshiba's lack of responsibility for their product.
