can't you go to a Best Buy or Circuit City to get such a problem repaired? I was worried I might wear out my w a s d keys on my notebook from playing first person shooter and might have to get it replaced.

Well the thing is could go to a repair center on my local area, but i just wanted to see if this happened to anyone else before i do, but i already went to a repair center and left the laptop there, they put a brand new keyboard to it and still did not work! all in front of me... they opened it up in seconds... coz if the keyboard was the problem i could walk out of the in 5 min... the would just change it and thats it.. but since it did not work then there is something else going on i had to leave it... ill post the result of this later!

    cheers!

    Wilman :)

ps: thank you for your comment.

Was your laptop still running when you left it on your bed??? you want to make sure you didnt fry anything because it can overheat if you cover the vents on the bottom.

if the keyboard has gone out, then it is an easy fix you can perform if you have even the most basic of technical knowledge. Furthermore, the keyboard costs no more than 30 dollars. (the company I work for purchases Toshiba keyboards for as little as 12 dollars)

I appologize. I only read the first post. The M55 has a dedicated IC for the keyboard controller which is what probably went bad. The M55 has a very poorly designed systemboard and is prone to failure (atleast in my experience). Ocassionally a capacitor near the keyboard connector gets knocked off the systemboard, but this is rather rare, especially if the laptop is well cared for and the technician who swapped out the keyboard didnt manhandle the laptop.

Have you tried plugging in a USB keyboard?

Dont worry, no need to apologize ;), and regarding your question, well yes, as matter of fact I am using a USB keyboard at the moment which is very frustrating since everytime i have to move or whatever i have to take it with me  , and about the capacitor, that sounds like easy to repair? what if i just buy a new one? how could i know which one is for my laptop and how hard is it to replace? thank you very much all your information is been pretty helpful

Note: I have the laptop Back from the Repair center! and they told me that the IDE controler of the motherboard was damaged... and that in orther to fix the laptop they had to replace the motherboard :(. :(

this is my problem with having to leave the notebook or pc with a service shop, say they break something on purpose so they can charge you for xtra labor costs, especially if you're not very knowledgeable about computers in the first place.

Thank you for your concern, but in my case i do know about computers, and before i left it, they gave me a paper containing everything the laptop had, ( hard disk, Memory, CPU, wireless, blablabla) AND they have a copy of that paper, so they know that i know lol... well the thing is that if after they give it back if i see any of those parts missing or malfunctioning, I will have a way of knowing if they were properly working in th first place.

again, thank you for your concern and your comment!

The "IDE Controller" as they said is the Southbridge. But the southbridge does NOT control the keyboard. As I said before there is a dedicated IC that runs the keyboard and power management aspects of the sytem. If your "IDE Controller" went bad then you couldnt boot to windows or load anything from CD's.

If it had been a capacitor that got knocked off, you would just have to find one of the right size and resolder it. But you have to have a good deal of technical knowledge and solder ability to do it. But interpreting what the guys at the Tech center said, a bad/broken capacitor does not seem likely.

In any case, you will need to purchase a new motherboard.

Ask them for a quote on the replacement. I am curious how much they want to charge.

Lastly, can you tell me the exact model number. It looks like this "PSA50U-XXXXX", with the X's being other numbers and letters.

Hello MaxxxRacer, and every person that has posted here! thank you once again to all of you, Maxx what you say is SO TRUE, now that you mention it, I have some questions,

1)the IDE controler does not control the Keyboard itself but ALL the IDE devices that are attached to the motherboard right?

    2) I know you told me about the IC that controls or runs the keyboard, but, when they opened the laptop they deatached the keyboard from a connector, so my quiestion is, is that connector an IDE one?

    3) well this is not a question is rather an answer to yours! ;), they Charged me 340 dollars!, the thing is that I live in Dominican Republic and those things are more expensive here, coz we have to import it from another country and then resell it.

    4) You mentioned that ur company buys keyboards very cheap, is that the same case for motherboards? if so, could you buy me one? i can pay you and then you shipp it to an USA address that i have :D

    5) The Exact Model Number of My laptop is TOSHIBA SATELLITE M55-S135 Part no. PSM50U-02L01C

Serial no. (REMOVED) - MaxxRacer adviced me to remove the serial number.

Thank yo Maxx, and thank you all!

    1. The IDE controller is the "Southbridge". Check out this wikipeida page for a full explanation. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southbridge_(computing)

    2. The keyboard connector is just a special socket for the keyboard. Toshiba uses that same style of connector in 99% of their laptops. the hard drive in your laptop uses an IDE connector as do the hard drives and dvd-rom drives in your destkop computer (assuming you have one)

    3. 340.. I would go bat****.

    4. Sadly I cannot purchase any parts from my company per company policy. The part # of your motherboard is K000030010 and can be purchased from National Parts. www.nationalparts.com They want 395 dollars for it.

EDIT: Please remove your serial number from the web. Its just not a good idea.
