    Please can someone help me...

Why is it that my laptop just shuts down (goes off). I have no idea why this happens as I have the laptop always plugged it...it hardly if ever operates with just the battery, as I use the laptop/notebook at home.

I'll be on the internet and the whole system will just shut down...

Can someone explain what I can do to fix this matter and also, can you give me some explanations as to the reasons this may occur.

    Cheers,
    A

    do you have an antivirus?
    do a virus scan...
if not you housecall (google it)
if virus is present...back up your personal stuff...and fresh install it (complete format)

Could this be the only reason as to why its doing this?

Can you explain what a housecall is?

    Cheers,

housecall is an online virus scan...(if you don't have a virus scan, or if your's is immune by a virus)....I don't think it's related to temperature...b/c she mentiioned that every time she goes on the Internet and the system would shutdown....(if I remember there was a virus causing this)

do a complete virus scan...hum....download AVG or AVAST ( if you can't do a complete virus scan via internet b/c your machine shutdowns....)

I have an inkling of a feeling that it has to do with overheating as I can use it for long hours. I don't think it has to do with a virus because everything seems to be working well....However, I will still run a virus scan.

If there are no viruses, can anyone tell me how to I test the temperature of my laptop. I read somewhere that via the BIOS, I can see whether or not my laptop has reached it's maximum temperature....I use to have a Compaq laptop and it never ever did that once....even if I use it for hours on end. Why is the Toshiba like this? When buying a laptop, is there a feature that you look for to ensure that its temperature resistance is high?

Where are you using the laptop mostly?? Many laptops have ventillation intakes on the bottom and side vents for exhaust so they are not happy working on a bed or on your lap for example...

Even placing a magazine at the back of your notebook to elevate the base a litle and allow airflow can make a difference if heat is an issue.

Surfing the web or similar tasks should not produce enogh load to overheat a system unless your environment is impacting on the heat dissipation of the machine.

    Hope that helps a bit.

Some computers have a setting in the bios for thermal shutdown too... maybe someone here who knows about your model of laptop can advise if/how to do this if it needs adjusting (unlikely though).

My notebook is always on my desk. The thing is that I can use it from anywhere between 8-10 hours per day, cos that is where I do my work.
The model of my Toshiba is Sattelite Pro - intel celeron.

If everything else fails, reformat the computer. Thats how you eliminate a software problem. If the problem contiues, its a hardware probleme, and you ought to bring it to a computer service.

You are not alone. It is definitely heat related. I have to keep a small desk fan blowing on my Toshiba to keep it up and running. It's a bit ridiculous.

I had the A70 and it shut down all the time because of the processor overheating. I found a small utilty that I installed that helped this problem. This utility pretty much made sure that the computer did not work too hard and it would slow it down if it was doing so, so the machine never really overheated. It was great.

My Compaq 1720US does the same thing. However, mine is definetley not virus or heat related. It's done this on every single format and I just recently formatted again last night and it's already doing it. The laptop always sits on a laptop cooler and I monitor the temps closely. It can either do it when the laptop is very hot or cold as could be, no difference. For the most part the random rebooting is COMPLETLEY random. However, there is ONE thing that I can do that triggers it every single time and that is opening Photoshop. So that lead me ot believe maybe my ram was bad so I swapped it out. That didn't sold the problem either. Anyone have any other ideas?

    thanks,
    nas

    Replace the heatsink,

The odds are it is not transfering the heat "out the tube" over in front of the fan.

You can run it open and see if it is. Take your finger and put it on the tube, odds are it will not even be warm. But, the top over the cpu will be only. There is liquid in the tube and its not transfering it out to the coil in front of the fan that will be cool to the touch.

I have replaced many in H.P.'s for that reason. Try it you will find that is the case with yours as well here. In the H.P.'s they would just shut (OFF) because of that problem. Everyone was saying motherboard and or cpu problems, But that wasent the problem, it was the heatsink that was defective, becasue of the liquid "in" that copper tube. Which they couldnt even tell me that from H.P. themselfs. Found out on my own. knocked a tiny hole in it and low and behold a tiny drip came out when I pinched the tube with my fingers.

Anyway I replaced with a new one and they have been working now for 4 months flawlessly ever sence and still are working fine again.

No motherboard replacement, or cpu. Thats all it was.

It "is" the problem (the heatsink) beleive me. When I was trouble shooting them H.P.'s I had the keyboard off and over to the side with the top open and I just put a fan over it to blow on the motherboard and it was just enough to keep it from shutting off. Now this was enough to keep it from shutting down, now when I say shutting down I mean shut off, just like you pulled the plug. It wouldnt do it all the time, it would do it when it seemed to have a bubble in that tube on the heatsink, When I opened a program, it would "sometimes" shut off, other times it would run for hours, until I put my finger on that tube, then and only then I noticed it was not transfering the heat through to the coil and the end of it.It would still sometimes have very luke warm air blowing out of the notebook, and sometimes it would be hot. But the new heatsink fixed my problems with them. I didnt use a pad between I just used heat compound and like I said they are working like new again with hot air always blowing out now, when the fan comes on right away, they had like I said just luke warm air before. Hope it is just like yours is doing, because its cheeper to repair this, than a cpu, or a motherboard, which I find very unlikely it is them.

I had every place I called tell me cpu or motherboard like I said. Were they wrong...Oh ya, H.P. did tell me to get a Bios update and a software up date as well, I said an update for a copper tube? Thats when I was asking if they had liquid in them, before I put a hole in it, because thats the only solution that it was,, when its hot 1/8 and then cool on that tube.

Goodluck on your mission with yours.

Mine does the same thing. I was thinking it was a heat issue as well. How do I take the cover off to see the heat sink??? I am new to laptops.

    thanks,
