My Toshiba laptop is about 3 1/2 years old and recently brokeand will cost about $300-$400 to fix. I would be happy to pay to fix it if i could guarantee that the laptop will last be for a long time more, but otherwise I am comparing prices at buying new. I'm looking at a Dell or an HP. So, my first question: How long does a Toshiba typically last for and is it worth my time to fix it? And my second question: If I were to buy a new one, Dell or HP?

You got 3 and one half years out of a Toshiba and are not even considering Toshiba for your new laptop purchase? Hmmm... Did you know that laptops are manufactured by companies like Inventec, Quanta, Compal and Arima not HP,Dell,Apple,Asus or Toshiba?
My point is.... If you are uninformed, you might be just as likely to get a Quanta, Compal or Inventec from Dell, HP or Toshiba...? -
Well, looks like you have been for awhile with your toshiba. I would recommend getting a new one. And if you are satisfied with Toshiba, buy a new Toshiba laptop. That is what I would do
The other old one, try to sell it to a little kid lol Im just kiddin´ but you should try to get some money out of it or something

I have a Toshiba Satellite M30 for nearly FIVE years now, and that as my sole computer I used for work, at home watching movies, playing games or doing some job on the side using photoshop, corel draw, etc.
Anyway it is still working just fine. I would definitely recommend you to consider buying a toshiba laptop once again. But no matter the brand you pick just remember that "you're not wealthy enough to buy cheap". Buy a cheap laptop (no matter the brand) and you will probably end up with a piece of junk. But that doesn't mean that the expensive one wouldn't be piece of junk too. Just take your time, dont rush into a decision, and you'll do just fine.
