I just wanted to let everyone know my experience with the M40
First M40 - Dead Pixel returned to futureshop...
2nd M40 - Noticed the right side of the screen is much more dim than the left side.. Can easily be seen by dragging a windows explorer window from the top right to the bottom left.. Especially noticable at highest brightness. Returned to Futureshop. Tried to get another, but they only had a demo and a defective unit instock
Went to Bestbuy, noticed the same rightside dim screen problem on the unit that was on display, was put out for display on sunday. So it looks like at the minimum a batch problem.. There was also a defective unit in the back with a note that said screen problems.. We don't know exactly what problems those were.
I asked the sales rep to get the highest serial number they had instock, and we opened and tested the unit in store. So far so good the screen has no missing pixels and the backlight is evenly distributed through the entire screen. I've only been running it for 2 hours.. I did notice that the DVD rom drive is definately different in this model than the previous 2.. seems little more study and louder in the seek.. but I don't mind that.
The keyboard also feels a litle different, so I'm hoping I did infact get a newer model.
Anyways I've got 14 days on this one.. I hope things work out..
Current owners check your screens to see if you notice the problem. you can set your background to pure white, stand back and you should see the right said is more grey than pure white at full brightness, ie. on AC power.
Maybe it was just a bad batch??

Mine had 2 dead pixels to start off with. Then one of them went away, and the other one is so small it does not really noticeable unless I'm looking for it.
My M40 has no other problem people have mentioned, so I may just live with this one dead pixel.

I don't think it's a bad batch, it's just pretty standard to see that kind of issue with LCDs. It just might be a batch that shows that "anomaly", but these symptoms fall within acceptable parameters.
For example, both units I've owned (I exchanged the first one because of a defective video card) had like a little darker areas in both bottom corners, but I think it has to do with from where the backlight originates. A Compaq V2140 I also tried had this symptom, but in a lot more severe way, and in-store demos showed the same effect, so I think it's pretty standard.
Also, my BenQ el-cheapo 15" LCD screen for my desktop has like vertical stripes of darker colors that you can only see when checking it from the sides. My previous laptop had like two small zones in the center corners where the lightness was noticeably lower.
Well, that's my experience, so I end up thinking that unless there are dead pixels or really apparent weirdities, a LCD is normalBut I say, lucky you if you found a perfect one in the end!
