hey, I'm just looking around for laptops and the Toshiba M500 caught my eye. Looking at a CTO config with an Intel Core2Duo 8700 and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 for a decent price. Just wondering how the heat issues are in such a small case? Preferrably somebody who has one can tell?

Same goes for the U500 with the 13" screen I guess, but mostly focusing on the M500

Also if someone could say how build/quality is? I'm not too familiar with toshiba's....

    Thanks

As I am aware from service the Portege M500 is a really hot laptop, with the bad meaning of the word... The cooling system was downsized as much as possible to get that ultra-thin style.

I would reccomend looking for 13 inch Satellite models, like the U400/U405 line, but avoid AMD processors (xxxxD models, where the first x is the letter and rest x are numbers), we have loads of AMD equiped laptops comming with overheating problems, especially the A300D-126.

I worked with the U400 quite a lot, and also with the Pro Satellite models. It's a very nice laptop (not as thin as the Portege) with no major problems with heat.

However I can't help with info on the U500, since it's just about to enter the European market in full-scale and we have not even imported some yet. Sorry...

As of build quality, I believe Toshiba is pretty good in terms of quality, with the only disadvantage of some models having fragile casing parts, but nothing that gets broken easily. It's mostly a bit of flex on the body on the front cover.

Good luck on your choice! I warned you about heat! :D

ooo...thanks a bunch for the advice. I was wondering since it is in a pretty thin case with decently power-hungry pieces.

Also thanks for the heads up on the AMD processors! Much appreciated! Guess I'll keep looking around.

Do you know if the heat is a general issue of this notebook which leads to higher failure rate than on average for notebooks in this performance class?

I think the heat would be manageable given that other 14" such as the Vaio SR and U80v both have a 4570.

I thought the m500 was part of the Satellite line, though? I can understand the Portege running hot, but I don't think Satellites try to be as thin as Porteges (Portegi? Portegae?).
