I posted this on another forum but I think it was the wrong one. I've had desktops for years and am going for a Laptop now. BestBuy has the M55-S351 for $1000 right now which seems like a good deal. I could also get a Dell 600m for close to that. I don't game at all. It would be used for light editing of digital photos with Photoshop CS2, e-mail and web surfing. Anybody have any thoughts on this?
    Thanks!!

I'm going to be heavily baised towards the M55 since I just got one a couple of hours and am loving the heck out of it. Some have complained about its build quality, especially with flexing in the keyboard area but I say don't worry about that, that must have been in the older models from last year. Mine has absolutely zero flex anywhere, its very, very well built. It takes a lot of effort for me to flex any part of the notebook. Or maybe I'm just lucky?
I'm just surprised by the reviews of some who say its build quality is mediocre and there's a lot of flexing in the keyboard when mine has none of that.

The screen is very, very bright, sharp and crisp, one of the best glossy displays I have seen.
Only complaint I have about this notebook is mine came in an orange color. The website didn't list the color and I had thought it would be black but thats not really a complaint to worry about. ;)
The M55 is highly recommended by me! :D

I would say there are many notebooks out there in the $1k range. If you could go to the "What should I buy Thread" click on that then click on the FAQ, then we could help you find a notbook that is just right for your needs. The Dell 600m is outdated with its old PM CPU's and it uses older 266mhz ram. I would look into the 630m / XPS m140 or the v2000z or v2000 from compaq (In the 14" range)

It depends - I think the Toshiba has the overall better build quality, but the Dell has superior value/performance, especially if you use the Dell coupons.

    Rahul,

Does your Toshiba have an Intel wireless card or else? How does it perform? My M55 (w/Intel card) has some connection problem while the other (L25 w/Atheros) works perfect!

Yes, I have an Intel wireless card and it performs flawlessly, just like the one in my last HP DV4000. The Atheros wireless card in my last last Fujitsu also worked flawlessly.
