If you tell us your budget and what you plan to do with your notebook we can help you better. The gaming performace is mostly dependent on the graphics card. Without knowing the specific model or card, it is hard to tell. More memory will increase your ability to multitask. It is usually cheaper to upgrade after purchase.

My budget is $2000 CDN. I want a toshiba, and I like the wide screens these models have(P30 is 17" widescreen!)

    P30 3ghz mobile 532 hyperthread, 533 FSB, L1 cache12/8, L2 cach 1meg
    ATI mobility radeon 9700 128ddr

    M40 1.6ghz M processor 533FSB, L1 cach 32/32, L2 cach 2meg
    Nvidia gforce go 6600 128ddr

    Thanks for the help.

The M40 has a ton better graphics card and will have better battery life. The 1.6 PM will be a tiny bit slower, but games aren't really relient on processors. They rely on video card and ram. So i would go with the M40.

Actually, you will get better battery life with the M40, but not that much, it is not a good representative of the Centrino name. Doing very light work, you'll normally get around 2 to 2.5 hours.

However, depending on your needs, there's the weight you can consider: the M40 weighs 6 pounds plus less than a pound for its AC adapter, and the P40 is 9.5 pounds plus its AC adapter that I can guess must be heavier.

Just some other things to think about :)

    Toshiba Satellite M40 - Pentium-M Sonoma 1.6ghz - 512mb DDR333 - 60gb 4200rpm - GeForce 6600 128mb - 15.4" BrightView WXGA TFT LCD

The P1.6M sonoma will easily outperform the P30's 3ghz, and can even edge out some 3.2ghz processors (non-EE). However, multitasking will be a problem, such as trying to do heavy workload while a memory intensive 3D game is minimized, etc.

And the Mobility Radeon 9700 is not even in the same class as 6600, it should compare with Geforce 5700.

I don't care how big or heavy it is, as I will be moving it very little. I want it as a replacement for my desktop that I am giving to my kids. I am looking for a machine that I can play games at a decent frame rate, and that is reliable.
