I have been asked to look at my brothers new Toshiba laptop, a P300-19P, because "I know about computers".

The laptop is less that a week old, and has been having some issues when turning on, in that the screen often 'mosaics' - it still works, and still shows the previous image, but it is very jumbled and illegible. As far as I can tell, it can only be solved with a restart. It happens usually when bringing the laptop back from hibernation by re-opening the screen.

The only thing that intrigues me somewhat is that the first time it happened was when he shut the lid to enter standby mode, and then put it in a new laptop bag he had bought for it. I wondered if maybe there was some static electricity or something; though it does seem a ridiculous conclusion to draw, as it would thus be a fairly useless bag if it did!

Ultimately I have no idea what the problem is - should I just tell him to get in touch with Toshiba; as it sounds as though it may be a fault.

Thanks for any help; and I'm sorry I can't provide more information!

Erm, he put it on standby, then put it into a bag? Not a good idea, good way to overheat your laptop.

Does it have dedicated graphics or integrated? My first suggestion would be to run a memtest ( http://www.memtest86.com/)
