are there any blu-ray drives that would be compatible with this laptop? I have said to their customer service that I'm interested in this laptop but i don't really understand making a 4K screen and not giving an HD optical drive.
I do think i want this as my first Toshiba laptop because i've always said someday i will own one. But I think this needs a blu-ray drive.

Me too, I dont understand why they did not include SSD and Bluray, this laptop would have been near perfect with those 2 options inside.

According to rep on Toshiba site, there will be retail version that has Bluray option, but the problem is noone knows what is the release date for retail version.

So for now the best option would be external Bluray, or replace the DVD drive yourself.

I am looking for Bluray drive for this as well. I will post some pictures soon and hopefully someone will be more knowledgeable than I do
about what kind of Bluray drive shall I get.

Yeah I'm trying to be patient, but I think i'd just go ahead and get this IF I can find a good writable blu-ray drive to put inside it... i'm not a very patient person....
I do have one other problem and i think it is said that there is No Card Reader for SDcards and such and that does hurt too cause i'd like this to be my on the go laptop for travel.

I think you will be happy to know that there is a card reader in the front, and it reads up to SDXC card.

The battery is only 43Wh which is ridiculous low for a higher performance quad core and not only that the battery is just Li-ion type (not even a polymer), this is the kind of battery capicity that is sold in small cheap rubbish laptops, and those are better around 47Wh.
Lack of mSATA slot is a disappointment too, use of suspected HM76 chipset does not even have that feature. No hope of RST, even is removed optical drive, if you got the DVD version, would consider getting rid of this, but no RAID support in BIOS.

About the Blu-ray XL, it is sold in the P50t-B00R which is for sale in Australia and New Zealand, from here on in. An Australian news paper did a review on it, but the found the review rather pathetic.

Could you tell me which laptop has mSATA, RAID, BD , high performance battery and amazingly accurate color with True 3840 x 2160 resolution IPS LED panel that runs on 60Hz, and goes for the price under $1800 USD???

With all due respect, it just a Toshiba P50t, which is in the same class of HP dv6 segment of the market, only difference is the screen 4K panel, and that is where the cost is involved.
An Alienware 14 that I purchased last year had better specs (all things mentioned) and was less than $1800, and that is in NZ where we get ripped off, just is not 4K, and still impossible as the Toshiba is the first model to get the panel. There is no way the Toshiba is better the AW14 in specs, except for the screen, although is about in line with a HP Envy 15-j, again the screen being the only difference.

Regardless that battery is a crying shame.

I agree, without that 4K panel this Toshiba is definitely no better than lots of Full HD laptops out there.
So if you dont want 4K, there are many other better options than this laptop.
But , if you want amazingly accurate color, True UHD 4K panel with 3840 x 2160 resolution on a 15.6 inch laptop right now, then this laptop is the only option for now.
And I paid dearly mostly just for that panel.

Yeah that is the aspect I and trying to get around right now, build and specs, although not bad at all (it pretty good actually), just not as good as what I already have, and a bit of a down grade in some ways. I definitely want it because of the panel. Recently I got a Dell U3014, and when I seen what it looking like the first time I powered it on, I was like wow, and even now it just looks amazingly good. The MacBook Pro 15 Retina I have is still very enjoyable to look at. I have taken a liking to acquiring anything with a nice panel. The fact this is a 4K laptop and is IGZO panel is certain something to behold, even though I don't even own it or seen it, I know it going to be good, and easy to know that from your own comments. Do I need this notebook, no, do I want this notebook, yes. Really want this panel though, so think I may might end up paying dearly for it also. Don't think I can afford a 1TB SSD though :( and got no idea what I would do with the Blu-ray XL drive that it comes with as standard, not much use to me, pretty cool if I had a 4K movie to play, although I would only likely play it once.

Even 128GB SSD will run nicely on this laptop, you can always buy external portable small USB 3.0 2TB drive later.

    Netflix has 4k streaming:

Netflix begins 4K streams - CNET

Amazon will have 4K streaming too:

Amazon announces 4K streaming partners including Samsung, Warner Bros., and Lionsgate | The Verge

Youtube used to have 4K videos, hopefully they will bring it back soon.

Yeah YouTube had 4K then it disappeared quickly. I could not get them to load anyway even if I paused it and waited. Likely used to much bandwidth, and good chance my ISP throttles YouTube anyway, as I have a hard time trying to get 1080p to stream.

I am able to pick up (as of today) the 4K model (same as yours) although it will have Blu-ray XL, which will work out to $2029 USD. I know that is expensive, but that is actually at a discounted rate in NZ of near 20%. So temped, I don't know if a can resist.

Please let me know if it can play games at low settings while maintaining 4K res, does it overheat when loading the CPU and GPU together?

I got this for BD playback/burn on ANY USB 3.0 machine, $124. This is also way faster than the built in units. The fail is it's not built in, however, until true 4k disks are mainstream, not re-mastered, your just watching up scaled 1080P. You do not need a hardware player to play 1080P BD on a laptop.

Yes, with external USB 3 option you can get better units, however the point of replacing internal drive is to not carry external drive...

^^^ Who wants to carry a drive? The drive is for home use and creating your BD files for the road. Of course if usage requires on site physical disk, then back to internal drive of sort.
