well the new satellite P850 is out
    1) use of metal in its design is nice
    2) seems like a slimmer system overall
    3) the optical drive is on the left fan and other ports on the right (not sure if i like this)
    4) supposed to come with an HD ready webcam 720P maybe
    5) don't like the look of the click pas but i hope its responsive

my questions is does any one know of what specs these new systems will come with ?
is there going to be a 1080p screen option (if its Matt or glossy)

Toshiba is pretty tight lipped on the specs until the new models come out [end of June].

As for the 1080p screen, Toshiba isn't known for including those on Satellites [usually the 14, 15" models have 720p screen, 17" has 900p]. They are usually glossy. If you need a higher resolution with matte screen [14", 15"], the Toshiba Tecra refresh may fit that bill [business class, supposed to launch end of June].

    Good luck

The Qosmio series is considered Toshiba's Multimedia/Gaming series: X-Series [gaming], F-Series [multimedia].

The X-Series only has 1080p with their higher tier 3D laptop
    The F-Series [755 series; glasses free 3D], has 1080p
Toshiba Direct | Qosmio Laptops & Notebook Computers
However, both of these laptops will most likely be getting their refresh with Ivy Bridge etc soon.

    Good luck

    **EDIT**
Actually I just remembered that Toshiba is coming out with a new "experiment" ultrabook laptop; the Satellite® U840W widescreen ultrabook. It is 14.4" and has a 21:9 ratio screen [not 16:9 @ 1080p , but 21:9 @ 1792x768]. It also comes with a nice sound system, Karman/Kardon speaker system [located on both sides of keyboard]. Seems like a multimedia/Ultrabook; kind of neat.

I purchased one of these laptops near the start of July, and I honestly really like it. My model has CPU of i7-3610QM, GPU of GT 630M, RAM 8 Gb. Other nice features are USB 3.0 and backlit keyboard.

My only beef with it is that I bought it in Canada, and thus have the bilingual keyboard. Grrr! But it could be worse; I use this laptop everyday at a desk in my work, so I use a Microsoft 4000 keyboard, which beats 90% of laptop keyboards anyway.

If anyone can give me some direction where to look for compatible keyboard replacements, that'd be great! Otherwise, I'll try to remap the keys that enable the Francophone mode.

idk where u wil get a keyboard Google laptop parts sites and check ............
i not gonna buy it for 2 reasons no 1080p screen option and no sub woffer sound is good but Toshiba needs to correct the low base response the reviews talk about the 17" version has a regular speaker and a subwoofer next to it in all it has 4 speakers like in the image ....

i purchased this laptop this month of september and have been playing with it for the past couple weeks.
it really fit the bill for my uses/preferences. i was debating between this and a lenovo y580 series, which has a way better graphics card (660m) but i did not like the ergonomics and sound system as much (not saying the lenovo ergonomics are worse, i just did not prefer them).

upon personal modification, i am really happy with my purchase. It comes with SRS premium surround sound, which allows you to change settings.
Mind SRS truebass speaker size should be set to medium low to have good bass response.

    my p850 specs are:
    i7 3610M
    nVidia 630M 2GB
    8GB RAM
    backlit keyboard
    15.6 1366x768
    750GB
    6 cell 48WHr

HERE ARE MY IFFYS, which i fixed:

    MOUSEPAD/CLICKPAD/TOUCHPAD
prior to my purchase, i really was annoyed by these click mousepads. i still prefer dedicated buttons, as well as enabling multitouch taps. i cant stand multitouch clicking.
a couple things i did to remedy this (to this best of my knowledge) and i think it would help others using this lappy.

    1------------------------------------------------------------------
    regedit
    current user -> software > synaptics > synTP > touchpadSMB2c
    2 finger tap action - (2)
    3 finger tap action - (4)

    (2) for right click, and (4) for middle click. i no longer have to 2 FINGER CLICK or 3 FINGER CLICK. i can simply 2 finger tap and 3 finger tap. :)

    2-------------------------------------------
i do not like moving my hands up and down especially while typing.
through synaptics, i expanded bottom left and right tap zones to the sizes of the markers, so i can tap them. mind that, i made mine for browsing backwards and forwards, and clicking buttons as normal. i enabled and expanded a top right tap for right click.
    meanwhile i enable chiral scroll.

that stuff is highly personal preference, but again, i thought it might be helpful.

    Backlight timer
next, you can change backlit timer settings in the BIOS.
hold fn-z to change to timer/always/off

    Hard Drive
i simply installed my old Corsair F120 SSD in there after wiping it.
formatted it through the Win 7 installation disk. entered the key provided on the bottom of the lappy and voila. :)
WEI all greater than 7 except the video card at 6.7 :(

    Graphics Card
nVidia system tools for Nvida Control Panel overclocking and whatnot abilities.

    Function Button
toshiba has an accessibility application that allows you to change some preferences here.

Revealing Extra power settings - includes another FAN setting in addition to Toshiba Power Saver Settings found in Advanced Power Settings
    regedit > local machine > system > currentcontrolset > control > power > powersettings > 54533251-82be-4824-96c1-47b60b740d00
navigate through the folders in that key. you can look in each key's friendly name and description for a little more information.
For fan settings the key is 94D3A615-A899-4AC5-AE2B-E4D8F634367F

    Rename Attributes to _Attributes.
Description: Specify the cooling mode for your system.
    Friendly Name: System cooling policy.

You can now see that in options in your Advanced Power Settings in processor management.
You can see two options for "System Cooling Policy"
If I want to shut my fan up, I change it to passive. And set the Toshiba Power Saver Settings - Cooler Method to Battery Optimized.

now i am too lazy to write anymore. cheers, and i hope this stuff can help other tosh owners out.
one thing though, i can't wait until i can get the 67whr (or w/e number it was) battery

one more thing, Windows Explorer Three Finger Swipe Navigation
copy and paste the following three entries into wordpad, and save as a .reg file and double click to enable three finger swipe navigation in windows explorer.

    Hey guys...
    DISMANTLING THE TOSHIBA P800/P850/P855

I thought I should shed some light on how to open up the computer.
I have not opened it to its fullest extent, in fear of losing warranties, so this is literally just to shed some light or give some hints.

    1. remove screw for HDD bay/RAM enclosure.
    2. remove HDD. undo the screws there.
    3. remove all the other screws on the bottom.
    4. removing the keyboard; the keyboard is FLEXIBLE; take a thin flat object and wedge it in the bottom slit of the keyboard. lift the keyboard up at its key points. i.e. bottom left/right edge and every key point is roughly 1.5 inches or 4 cm inwards. so that makes about 7 key points. there also one or two key points on the keyboard sides. upon lifting those key points up, you can pull the keyboard towards you a little to reveal the larger tabs on top of the keyboard. now the keyboard is ready to be taken out.
    5. removing the keyboard reveals many more screws to remove for full laptop dismantling.
    6. to remove the aluminum lid, you can use a flat metal wedge and wedge the upper metal part off.
    7. one can also wedge the plastic sides.

now here is where i basically left it. i never fully took off the aluminum part, nor did i fully unclip the keyboard from its connectors.
i will update if i ever fully take this thing apart.
i figured out the keyboard removal and the lifting off of the aluminium sheet on two separate occasions. so the instructions are not in perfect order, nor are they perfect at all.

i do think that removing the keyboard is one of the biggest sheds of light to myself... at least.
i have yet to investigate the laptop screen, where the wifi antennas may be reaching around and stuff.
