Does anyone know where I can get a Toshiba Portege M800, the only place I can find is Comet at £699.99. Surely there are others selling it and maybe at a better price.

    Thanks

I recently bought a M800 (I live in SE Asia) with the specs in my sig. Got a really good deal on it (educational pricing from the Univ) and got full retail copies of Adobe CS3 premium as well as MS Office 2007 for free. :D

It's a great laptop, and although I haven't spent much time with it yet, initial impressions are very positive except for the glossy keyboard. The light from the LCD reflecting off the keys tends to obscure the key markings a bit.

Will post more once I am familiar with the machine.

PS: I still love my NEC!

Is that the only drawback you fell the M800 has ?
coz I am going to purchase a portege but once i called toshiba they gave me an option of the Satellite M300 which is nice too.

The M800 is very decent; so far, I've come across a few annoyances, in decreasing order of importance.

    (1) The lousy Mat****a optical drive. Region hard-locked, with no way to change the firmware. Very temperamental- refuses to even read DVDs from other regions. Maybe it depends on the unit...if you are lucky, you may end up with a LG or Samsung optical drive.

    (2) Touchpad is a bit too small for my tastes. YMMV. It lacks multi-finger tap. I really love the large, easy to use t/p of my NEC, so perhaps, I am a bit spoilt in this regard :D

    (3) Glossiness of the keyboard. Not really such a big deal, and probably only occurs with the 'mercury silver/gray' color option. The white one may not have this problem.

Apart from this, it's an awesome laptop. Very fast, especially since I converted it to Win XP Pro from Vista Business. The XP downgrade license was included in the purchase.

BTW, the M800 is known as the Satellite U405 in other markets if I am not wrong.

    Hi Andromeda!

While looking for a silent alternative to my XPS M1330 I stumbled upon the M800. Can you say something about the noise it is making? Because I need a really quiet notebook :)
