I am currently looking for a new laptop to purchase later this year, and have narrowed it down to three laptops, one of which is the new Portege R835. Whichever laptop I end up purchasing, I will be replacing the hard drive with the new OCZ Vertex 3. However, I have heard that the drive is only worth getting if you are using SATA 6gb/s connection. So my question is, does the new Portege R835 released earlier this month support SATA III?
(copypasta FTW)

Well, according to the reply to my other thread, it would appear that all laptops with second-generation core i processors, which the R830s do have, support SATA 3. Problem solved.

Good to know. The R835 looks awesome

can anyone confirm if they are able to achieve SATA 3 / 6Gbps speed with an SSD on the Toshiba R835?? The HM65 Express chipset supports the speed but apparently Toshiba may have disabled the hi-speed SATA 3 port in the BIOS which would require some tinkering to re-enable..?
-
Where did you hear this? I just want to see if true or not; as I have a 2nd generation i-core too.
Thanks!

I didn't hear it per se but I've read people were having issues getting SATA 3 speeds and then I went onto Intel Live Chat tech support where they said even though a machine may have a HM65 Express chipset, which supports two SATA 3 ports, the manufacturer can choose to disable them as they choose. I think battery life / cooling may deteriorate and also Toshiba's own SSD upgrades don't yet support SATA 3 so that would explain why they might choose not to activate the SATA 3 ports. BUT it does suggest a clever technically-minded person might be able to activate the SATA 3 ports and could report on how to do this / the results...?

Any takers..?

Can check yourself to see if Toshiba have limited you to 3Gb/s speed. You need to ensure the primary drive is using port0 or port1, as they are the only 6Gb/s capable ports, then ensure the bios hasn't locked ISS (interface speed support). See pictures above to check using baredit. Those were taken on my 2530P which supports 3Gb/s only.![[IMG]](images/storyImages/cksatagen.th.png)

Does your machine have a Sandy Bridge or HM65 Express chipset?
Also if the manufacturer does have ISS enabled is it possible to disable it or to otherwise make some kind of software change to enable the 6Gbps speed the SATA controller is capable of?
Thanks! -
For the r835-P56x, I ran the crystal mark disk info utility. It reports that my Intel 510 is running at SATA/600 speed which I presume is SATA III.

Nevermind, 250/200 read/write is not SATA III speeds. R835-P56X does not support SATA III.

Trying to make some noise on the Toshiba message board. It seems like someone ought to respond soon if their customer service is worth anything.

Has anybody checked ISS, detailed here? The result of there plus the details of ISS is want you'd want to provide Toshiba as evidence of capping the link. The same register would need to have it's write altered in bios to get full SATAIII speed. It's a write-once register so is locked after the bios sets it. -
I downloaded baredit but I can't figure out how to replicate what you did there.Last edited by a moderator: May 7, 2015
