Why is there such a dearth of info about the R100 ultralight? Anyone seen a review other than CNET's? Anyone with experience with this laptop? Any info on the October release of Toshiba's new line?

No, I'm not from New Jersey! [ :D]

Hey there flex727, I have a contact at Toshiba and will send along any questions you have about new October releases from Toshiba for their notebooks. What specific questions did you have?

    Hello abaxter,

Just wondering if you would be able to send me the details on Toshiba's October releases. I have put in an order for a Fuji S6120, but if there is something similar in size/weight, or anything new or different I can still change my mind on it.

hey Matt, I've sent an email to the fella at Toshiba that's running their PR and tomorrow I'll actually be at the PC Expo in NYC and will see if I can track down a Toshiba rep there to ask them.

When it comes to laptops, Sharp's have the best LCD screen hands down. Much better than the Toshiba. Sharps also generally have better components.

There is a review somewher ecomparing the a Sharp Actius ultra-portable with a slim Toshiba Portege and a third brand. The Toshiba came dead last in the sytem performance tests, because of
    1)cheap slow HD
    2)poor screen card
    3)memory latency

In the R100 category Sharp has the actius UM-32W which is 12" XGA screen and P-III_M 1G or 1.3G and about 2.8lbs. That screen is phenomenal - ultra bright, high contrast ratio and with anti-glare coating as well. Good model and I suspect it will be replaced soon, so there should be some deals on it.

I personally think the BEST deal with the Sharps is the AV-18P which is 3.7lb (4.1lb with DVD/CDRW on board) and the same 12" screen. The Athlon XP-M chip on it is also faster in memory access (DDR SDRAM) than the Pentium III-M's. But be careful not to confuse this with its weaker cousin (the AV18) which has no preinstalled 802.11B and comes with XP Home, instead of Pro.

Fujitsus also come with good screen and the S6120 than someone above mentioned is a good choice at 3.7 lb with 13" screen. Again for the money I'd go with its cheaper Althon verison of that exact same chassis (I think the name is thes S2120 or 2020 or somehting like that). Then just load that up with RAM (buy aftermarket, not the pricey stuff direct from seller).

But for me I think the Toshiba portabes are overpriced and when you look under the covers they ain't that hot. Sexy on the outside though.

I have not read any bad reviews yet. Most are like the one above.

I can't say the screen on this thing is any different from any of the Apple or PC laptops I have owned in the past. They all seem the same to me.

This machine seems reasonably fast - even for some light gaming. Original Unreal or Quake III engined games run fine.

3dmark2001 is comparable to the 7500 I used to have in my 2811!
    Score: 5064 R100
    Res: 1024x768 32bit
    OS: Microsoft Windows XP
    Date: 2003-7-22
    CPU: Unknown 899 MHz
    GPU: Trident CyberBlade-Series

In case anyone was wondering, the r100 will not play UT2004. At 6*4 at the lowest settings the game was unplayble. I suspect that there are soem driver cheats being used to get the decent 3dmark2001 results, beacuse a computer that got a similar score in the 3dmark played ut2004 respectably at medium settings and 8*6.

Too bad they can't put a clocked down RADEON 9600 into these small and lights.

I know what you mean. I'm trying to find out if there are any bootable CD ROM drives that are compatible with the R100 . So far the only one that appears to be compatible is the Toshiba, PX1055E-1NST, (Freecom drive). I have been unable to locate one of these so far and and trying to find out if others are compatible as well. Must it be a 16-bit PCMCIA card CD ROM drive, or will a 32-bit work as well. Would appreciate any assistance as my SYSTEM file has been corrupted and I'm completely down until I can reload XP.
