The 706 looks really, really good for $2000, except Toshiba left out the WUXGA display. The 708 is a completely different animal - SSD, quad-core, SLI, vista ultimate. Were it priced at $3000, I'd consider it, but $4200 is just too steep without a 1920 screen. I wrote a lot about my initial impressions of the 708 in this thread - http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=314434

I spoke with Toshiba about a week ago and the rep informed me that the X305 refresh is coming April 09. Perhaps next year we will see 17" WUXGA screens return again and Toshiba can give us the perfect gaming laptop.

I think if I don't buy a 706 soon and get a WUXGA replacement, I'll hold out and see what else comes down the pipeline.

wait wait...what do you mean by the X305 refresh?
is it like an updated version with new looks and hardware ( e.g X205 to X305 )? or just the same notebook with upgrades?

From my discussion with the rep I'm fairly certain it will be new models, like as you say from X205 to X305. Toshiba has already established the X305 line with 4 different models. I don't see them introducing any newer X305 units 5 months out from a proposed April refresh. With that $4200 X708 top-end quad-core model now available (not many have been sold) Toshiba will be pushing current inventory out.

April seems to be the month for new gaming models at Toshiba. Remember the X205 was released back around April as well.

Alrightttttt....I'll keep my ears on the watch then! Let's hope they tone down a bit of the fancy sexy chasis and put bit more emphasis on the specs =)
