I was able to buy a q8102x and wanted to buy the 1080 display that normally comes with the x8104. Same video card. q8102x has a 945p. apparently the ports may be different; looking for a workaround. Did anybody try this?
Psyched for my new q8102x. Put a Samsung solid state drive and this thing flies. And man does it look refined.

I have the same model as you, and I have wondered this as well. The problem is finding a 1080p screen. Unless you bought a x8104 parts machine off ebay or something, the display themselves are hard to find. I have upgraded mine a lot too. Tossed the original wifi/blutooth card in the trash, and installed a new intel centrino advanced N6235 for true N bandwidth. 16gb of corsair ram, 240gb ssd, 1TB SSHD, and just put a core i7 [email protected]/3.6 ghz cpu in.

Indeed - lots of '1080p' 17.3" screens for other Qosmios - X775 & X870. But compatible? not sure. I'm thinking of using an external monitor, only using the screen when in 'lugging mode'. The trick is that once the lid is closed, you can't active the power button. U know a way around that?
Just checked out the Wifi Card. Worked good i take? Solid upgrade. Btw - i tried one of those mini cards to get USB 3.0 'ish'. For the life of me i could not get it to fire up. All drivers upgraded, looked everywhere. It wasn't very practical though - the card kept coming out every time you used it, but faster USB would have been nice. But in the end 300 mbps from wifi? sweet.
I ended up upgrading from a Q894 and man X8102 is waaay faster. They really shine with SSD. Before I installed the new drive the computer barely ran. Now it reboots in a blink. Runs way cooler than the Q894 too - same video card tho. Either way I'm curious about heat - have you replaced / cleaned the fans by any chance?
Cheers! -
Wifi card is an easy upgrade once I figured out which drivers to use. I kept trying to use the original Toshiba bluetooth stack, which is complete garbage, and just used Windows built in driver. Works great. Ya, when I upgraded the cpu, I cleaned the fans, and heat sinks, and removed the old thermal paste, and applied a fresh coat of arctic silver. Max temp playing games is 79c. That is with a broken notebook cooler under it to make sure I get good airflow. Would imagine that having a functional cooler underneath would lower temps a tad. Of course the broken cooler is another story all together.

Well, i got the wifi card you recommended and i'm pretty sure i have to replace one of the fans since it's making a crickety sound. I've been looking at ebay for fan replacements but it seems they only sell one type but i think there are two different fans on the laptop? Any insights into that?
I was planning on getting this type of fan:

I'm a little nervous opening the laptop but it's a must do - the fan is starting to go... Other than that the computer drives like a dream. I wish they had filters for the fans so they didn't collect dust like no tomorrow...
Toshiba Qosmio X505-Q8102X display upgrade to Q8104X possible?
