I was thinking of getting this laptop. I was also looking at the HP ENVY 17 or the HP DV7 4080. Any opinions of this model or Qosmio? I want to get a good gaming laptop that will last.

I would say yes, even with only a 500 GB HD, but I have a real pet peeve about the exclusion of 1080p from laptops that include high end video cards and Blu-ray drives. lol It's like a big F-You from laptop manufacturers to people who want to save money on the same chasis with one or two less features. How 1080p is not a standard option on ALL gaming laptops with high end video cards is absolutely beyond me!
That said, however, some people actually prefer the lower resolution. If you are one of them, or you are more forgiving a person than me about pet peeves like this (lol or don't have this particular pet peeve to begin with) then I think that lappy looks decent for the price. -
I agree! How do you put in an 18.4" screen w/o fullHD 1080p support.
Cheers, -
Exactly! It's like Chevy deciding to create a budget Corvette with a 4 cylinder engine. lol
-
As soon as you see the 1080p panel Toshiba used, you'll thank god they left an HD+ screen option...it's really horrid.
-
That is a preetty horrid excuse for not making full HD lappy screens, though. lol
"Yeah our supposedly top end option screen sucks balls so get the lower end one!" -
its not like it's their choice. currently there are only two 18.4 panels exist, both from Samsung, and they're using both of them.
-
The Q890 I checked out said Seiko in the specs, but I guess I'll have to take your word for it.
-
I think he's right, and I am not sure what to think about it. Because I really prefer full 1080p, but according to a4500535, the full HD screen on the Qosmio sucks balls.
-
@Invarr, You can't be right about only Samsung making 18.4" panels, Asus also has a couple of 18.4" models...

These ASUS use same Samsung panel, Acers too. At least this was the case at the start of this summer.
I've spent quite a lot of time trying to find better replacement. I would appreciate if you offer info proving contrary.
-
I was pretty surprised as well...I can't find any info on 18.4" Seiko panels, but I swear the device manager said it was a Seiko display. Oh well.
I guess we won't be seeing any new screens on the Qosmios then. That kind of sucks, since the GTX 460m will finally allow the Qosmios to compete with Asus' G series. I can live with the current 1680x945 display, but the 1080p is just atrocious...would LED backlighting at least rectify the dimness issue? -
Okay, dumb question: Surely there are settings in the video drivers that allow you to crank up the brightness, contrast, color, beta, and other attributes to customize the screen to how you want it, right?
I find it very hard to believe that Toshiba created a laptop with full high def that you cannot tweak to look as good as the lower resolution monitor. Also, was this a major complaint of the pro reviewrs? Because I don't remember reading it if it was. The reason I bring this up is because most pro reviewrs are very tech savvy and probably tinkerered with their review model to get the desired brightness and visuals, which may explain why I don't recall reviewers complaining about this issue in the 1080p 18.4 inch Qosmio screen. -
Chiro, I tried every trick I could to make the screen better. Win7 color calibration, changing the Nvidia color channels, playing with just about every dial I could. If you really don't believe me, I can take photos of the 1080p and HD+ screen and show you. The difference is not even subtle, you could spot it 30 feet away.
Maybe the reviewers were in a dark room or something, I don't know. The Notebookcheck review never really makes it clear whether they're using the 1080p or HD+ screen. -
Toshiba always preferred color saturation and contrast, in the cost of max brightness (being this way since X200 at least). This approach is ok as long as laptop used indoors without exposure to sunlight - it looks very good in these situations. But when any sunlight comes to play - here we go, whites become dull grays.
Notebookcheck has reviews for two X500 models, one with HD+, one with FullHD, and you can clearly see numeric differrence in measured brightness. -
Currently, CMO is the primary vendor to produce the 18.4 Display( N184H6).
Rest of 18.4 panels were made in 2008.
