I just picked this lappy up yesterday, 12/7/10, and It is simply awesome. I'm not a heavy gamer but, I loaded it up with Crysis (yeah I know its old, but still fun) GTA 4, and COD-all play no problem. I don't really bother with maxing out the computer settings, or bench marking, or any of that other stuff as long as it works I'm okay withit. I'm playing the games with my wireless xbox 360 controller (I'm a lousy mouser) :p The only thing I will probably change later is buying a larger SSD drive. I will also use it to encode video, play music, and watch movies. I did have to ward off comments concerning the next refresh, sandy bridge, possible GTX 580 , ATI 6000 card blah, blah, blah. THERE WILL ALWAYS BE SOMETHING AROUND THE CORNER. I do recommend it.

    Good Luck with your choice

    HAPPY HOLIDAYS

I would take a look at the Q896, which is $300 off on Amazon right now. The main difference between the Q896 and the Q898 is the SSD, but you can add one to the Q896 later (and it'll be cheaper and bigger than the one that comes in the Q898).

The only problem with buying an SSD later on is that the primary benefit of the drive is its use as a boot-drive which you put Windows on plus other programs you want to run a little quicker. Translation: You will have to re-install the OS and whatever other software you had already put on, which can be a pain in the posterior, paricularly if you have installed a ton of games before getting your SSD.

That said, the OP can wait a few weeks and see if the price of the Q898 drops as well.

No, you don't need to do all that. There are programs that can create an image of your entire hard drive, including the OS.

Wow !!! Been reading the forums for a few days.....

Been stuck between the: ASUS G73JH-BST7 (BEST BUY) , SONY VPCF136FM/B (BEST BUY) and QOSMIO Q896 (COSTCO.COM). All three are Desktop-Replacement/Gaming Comps.

After reading Caskey's review I think I've decided. QOSMIO!

I saw the Sony today, seemed very mediocre (though looks professional and i like the Brand). The ASUS was a complete turn-off for me when I touched it. The touchpad has a rubber lining on it!? (like !? feels sticky and wrong!). Plus what is ASUS? I remember they made average mobos and gaming cards when I was into gaming about 8 years ago. (MY last comp had an ASUS mobo that I built, mobo fried after 2 years :(.

I haven't yet gotten my hands on a Qosmio but I know I'm going to love it, as long as it runs!

Sorry for the rant!! Just happy ! Gonna order Costco.com + Express Shipping! Let u know my thoughts when I get it.

    Congrats on your new purchase!

One thing, though: Asus makes THE BEST motherboards and video cards, hands down. Sounds like you just got a lemon, which happens.

I have owned all three of the laptops you guys are discussing.

Sony - Fantastic quality, but not really for gaming, more of a business class machine.

ASUS - Wow, what a fail, I have owned 3 of the G73JH's (all with the latest vbios, etc.) and they are truly the worst quality laptop I have ever owned. Just had to return my brand new one from Best Buy yesterday after 3 days of ownership, dead hard drive......Last one, dead screen, one before that dead video card......So yea, don't do it, they are ALL lemons.

Qosmio - Great machine, I had one and sold it. Getting ready to purchase another because it was so good. Quality is good to very good, screen is easy on the eyes, not too bright, but bright enough. Keyboard is great and believe it or not, the small spacebar is fantastic when gaming. If you have ever noticed that when you hit the space bar gaming on one side for so long it starts to droop to the left or right, well no longer with the short one on the Qosmio.

I think the Qosmio is probably one of the best out there and it stays very very cool hours into gaming on any game. The alienware won't stay that cool and has similar issues to the ASUS.

Not only that, but the 17" Alienware laptops are extraordinarily expensive. When I consider the deal I got on my Q893 for just over $1,100.00 and compare it to ALL the current gaming machines with the 460m, 360m, or 5870 GPU's I am blown away by the absolute steal the so-called "low end" Qosmio is.

Also, jpowell, I have to be honest and say that the Best Buy G73's are really low end. The new G73JW's bought from Xoticpc or other quality vendors are awesome machines. In fact, if I were going to spend 1.5K or more for a laptop, it would not have been the Qosmio. I would have definitely gone for the G73 because of the cost to features benefit. But the fact is that for just over a grand, you simply CANNOT beat the Qosmio Q893!

    Hi Chiro,

I can certainly appreciate your opinion and I am glad you are liking your Qosmio. You probably don't know it, but you are just looking at specs, you saved yourself a lot of headaches NOT going with the ASUS. BestBuy model or the other model, that forum is FILLED with the same issues that plague all the G73's.

I am actually torn between ordering an alienware or the Qosmio. The alienware's are having some heating issues as well, so Qosmio it will probably be.

You could also consider doing what I did exactly:

I knew that whatever gaming rig I bought now would probably not have the same staying power as if I were buying in the beginning of the tech's generation, right? So I spent a little over a grand on a machine I can probably sell for about half what I paid for it in a year's time and then invest in something far more powerful.

I ran accross a few posts today:

Some say the i5 (dual core), and thus will run COOLER than compared to the i7 (quad core).

I know the Qosmio has some possible heat issues and wanted your guys feed back on this.

    Thanks

Have another question. Sorry don't mean to hijack the thread.

I've read that the 1080p screen (896, 898) is possibly darker than the 720p screen (found on 892, 893, 894).

Is this true? Is there a big difference in contrast?

    Thanks!

I've read that 1080p is almost twice darker.
It was written by person who saw those lcds in local shop.
but 1080p has got better colours.
