    I have a Toshiba r205 laptop...
with this laptop you need the right dvd drive that is made just for the model's r200-r205 and a little bit more models i think. So Toshiba made a laptop that does not have a Dvd drive built in, and requires you to have a special Toshiba DVD drive.
    I know this by...
when i refurbished the laptop from a bad hdd and more, I used the dvd drive that was with the laptop. Not knowing this is the only dvd drive that will recovery the R205, I did not buy it. my bad...
Now I have others external Dvd drives that I have tried to use and failed.

    Now that is my story,

My problem is that I don't have the means to get the right dvd drive for this laptop. But is there a way to boot off from usb or external hdd? with the recovery on. I am going to try this tonight but I don't know... any ideas I can try?

-Problem Toshiba R205 Laptop will not recognize the external dvd drive when I try to recover the HDD.

I set up a External HDD to be bookable drive, and coped the recovery disk to the drive, then opened the recovery in DOS. but DOS will not load the install.exe. so I opened up the recovery tool in DOS- then searched for the recovery presses.

    This works so far...
