Currently planning to buy a R500 for my wife.

Model we are looking at is the R500-S5008X

Toshiba Portege Laptop Computer R500-S5008X Genuine Windows XP Professional, Intel Core 2 Duo Processor U7700, 2048MB DDR2, 160GB 5400rpm SATA, 12.1 widescreen WXGA, Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN, Bluetooth v2.0 + EDR, 1 year standard limited warranty

Retail price is $1699 for this model.

My question is after speaking with a Toshbia CSR a R500-S5008V will be coming out in the near future with the same exact specs as above but with the Vista Business 32bit OS.

Should we wait for the newer model?

I am aware of the performance slowdowns with Vista and that SP3 of XP will be released very soon.

Any opinions that are directly related to the R500 would be greatly appreciated.

    TIA

wait until the 128gb SSD model come to your area.

and I think Vista business is not at all slow, premium is slow due to the needless Aero.

Go with XP Pro, vista will be too slow. For $1699 does it have the DVD burner? I think the 5008X does not have one. I have the 5002X and am quite happy with it.

No, don't wait. Avoid Vista if you can. There is no real advantage to it unless you want everything to run a bit slower.

The SSD is nice, but it bumps up the price a lot.

Thanks for the info provided. from everyone above. I think we will go with the XP Pro model.

Unfortunately the SSD models are out of your price range!
