I am trying to replace the memory modules on an old Toshiba Satellite S1800-814.
There seems to be insufficient room to remove the modules, it hits the notebook's casing, if there was only an extra mm or two it would be an easy job. Is there an easy way to do this job?

The one at the top is not properly inserted. Insert it fully into the slot, and then pull out the side clips, the module should pop up at a 45* angle.
