Hey everyone. I've just decided on getting a Toshiba Satellite A505-S6997. Upon further research, I found that Walmart had this laptop in stock, although online only. However, the specifications for the Toshiba Satellite A505-S6997 differ slightly on Walmart's site than the specifications on Toshiba's site. I noticed stuff like DDR2 instead of DDR3 and varying amounts of USB 2.0 ports. They could be typos but I don't want to take the chance. Now, I'm questioning whether or not the Toshiba Satellite that Walmart has is really the A505-S6997 I want. Here are the links:

    Toshiba's Site: http://laptops.toshiba.com/laptops/satellite/a500/A505-S6997

    Walmart's Site: http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=12523027#ProductDetail

Note: Walmart is my first preference to purchase this laptop from as I'm not familiar with the myriad of online retailers that sell laptops.

Buy from the toshiba website. DDR3 is worth the extra $22. If you need more ports then u can buy a USB hub.

Yes, that is where I looked for the A505-S6997 originally but strangely enough the toshiba website doesn't sell that model. The only satellite models I found that the toshiba website actually sell are these 3:

    Satellite A500-ST56X4
    Satellite A500-ST56X3
    Satellite A500-ST56X4

    http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/laptop-model.jsp?family=Satellite&model=A500&sku=bts#skus

Apparently these are the only Toshiba Satellite A500 series models that the Toshiba Website has in stock or something. They don't have these pre-configured models for sale: http://laptops.toshiba.com/laptops/satellite/A500

That link only provides the spec info and online retailers where you can buy each of the models. I don't want to customize a satellite either. So, walmart is still my first preference. I'm still trying to figure out if the Walmart A505-S6997 is actually the same as the one advertised on Toshiba's website. Links for the two models are in the OP.

The 7 usb ports is a typo, and walmart is selling the same model as the one advertised on toshiba website. Walmart has just replaced the DDR3 Ram with DDR2 , thus also reducing the price.

Walmart is selling the same laptop. they have just replaced the Ram.

The A500 series only has 3 USB ports. There is no way to change increase USB ports.

Hey there wanted to drop my two cents worth of info! I own the Toshiba A505-6986 model and everything about it is great! The only issue that came with mine is the keyboard which has a lot of flex on the left side for some reason, newer models this is fixed! I have overclocked my video card to speeds pass a 240M GT nvidia card and the temps and system are fine! The cpu never reaches anything above 70c and the gpu never goes beyond 70c. at idle my cpu temps are 40c and gpu temp 45c and system temps 40c. I upgraded the hard drive to a western digital scorpio 640gb which performs alot faster than the stock 400gb toshiba hard drive. the screen quality is great as well as the audio from the nice speakers. Mine came with a 6 cell battery which lasts almost 2.5 hours while using the web constantly.

I got my laptop on sale for 699 buxs out the door at a office depot retail chain. This compared to many other laptops has a professional build quality to it! I am very impressed with the cool temperatures and have not had one issue yet in 64bit windows 7 that comes installed. I have tried many of the latest pc games and all work well at the native screen resolution.

One other down side is the wireless network card, the one that came in mine was a realtek which does 802.11n speed but only on the 2.4ghz frequency, it wont do 5ghz wireless n!

Mine came with a std dvd recorder drive not bluray, all the new A505 series comes with ddr3 ram 4gigs or more and only have 3 usb with a 4th shared usb/esata connection.

The walmart one is a good deal since you get a P7450 intel chip which uses 25W compared to the T-series which uses 35w. Also the model your looking at comes with an extended battery which should get you 5 hours or so.

Enjoy if you purchase it, its a nice system!

P.S. the webcam is not the greatest, even after tweaking all settings the picture is dark and fuzzy. This is an issue with many of the newer satellites!!

Thanks for the help wall street and skyhawk. I think I'm going to go ahead and get the walmart one then. Is there a significant difference between DDR2 and DDR3 though?

Once again all A505-69** models have ddr3 ram so if it says ddr2 somewhere its a typo!

shook my LG lcd tv is 720p and 1080p blurays look good on it, it still detects the source as 1080p at 24fps, same with a pc with lower res screen, blu rays will still look better than crappy compressed mpeg2 dvds!

Sorry for being so obstinate skyhawk, but I'm just trying to make sure that I'm not getting ripped off or anything. So you say that all A505-S69** models have DDR3 1066 MHz memory? Could it be possible that Walmart replaced the DDR3 1066 MHz memory with DDR2 800 MHz memory like wal street mentioned? Or is it only just a typo on Walmart's website? Sorry again for my stubbornness.

    Thats not ture.

    I have a 6980 which has DDR2.

Something to watch out for is, Best Buy sells a 69803 which has DDR3 but the system bus runs @ 800MHz which I'm not sure whats the point in putting DDR3 when the system bus runs only to 800 MHz.

Make sure if you get DDR3 the system bus runs @ 1066 MHz and not @ 800 MHz

Yes it comes with DDR3 ram, even the link to toshibas website for that exact model says so in the specs for the system! like on my A505-s6986 I have a intel 2.2ghz t6600 cpu, the fsb is 800mhz for it, so even though I have ddr3 ram in my system, it is running at 800mhz speeds, now if i were to upgrade the cpu to a chip that has a fsb of 1066mhz then the ddr3 ram would be running at 1066mhz. Since the system your looking at does in fact have a P-series intel cpu, the fsb is at 1066 so it would have to have ddr3 ram that will run in sync with the fsb!

I dont beleive walmart sells a different model compared to what is on toshibas website. walmart just typoed the ram type
