So, I was begginning to have problems with my laptop in a sense that whenever the network card was flipped on the computer would instantly freeze and not let me boot it up again. Unfortunately, my dad bought me this laptop from E-bay and I don't think it came with a recovery DVD (I've looked everywhere). Not having an recovery CD I stupidly tried to fix this on my own and after looking on the web in 5 minutes I read somewhere that if you use a copy of Windows Xp to essentially override and reformat the computer. Well, I tried that, but when I was using the Boot from CD option it won't let me delete the unpartitioned portion of the hardrive and it instantly switched to the 8 MB partioned area which I think was used for networking.
Now I recieve the following error:

For Realtek RTL8139(X)/8130/810X PCI Fast Ethernet Controller v2.13 (020326)
    PXE-E61:Media Test Failure, check cable
    PXE-M0: Exiting PXE ROM

Any help with this big blunder of mine is much appreciated :(

I am trying to install Microsoft Windows XP Home SP1a. This is meant for HP and Compaq, but I thought since it's standard Windows XP OS that it would work.

When left in in brings up a blue screen with "Windows Setup" at top left. After it's done loading it starts the windows.
    --------------------------------------------------
When the setup is done running you can set up Windows XP by pressing "enter"

You can repair a windows XP installation using recovery console by pressin g "R"

And then you can quit out by pressing "F3"
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you decide to install, it brings you to the service agreement which you accept.

Then this brings you to a screen where you can create and delete partitions. When I was initially here I wished to go ahead with the reformatting so I wanted to delete the unpartitioned area (which was the main part of the hard disk). But instead of deleting that when I told it to it deleted the 8MB partitioned area and ever since that the error I was telling you about is being expressed.

    The Partitioned area looks like:

57232 MB Disk 0 at Id 0 on bus 0 atapi [MBR]
    C: Unpartitioned space 57224MB

I'm sure it would take the standard recovery CD for this unit, but I don't know where to dowload one from.

Ugh, so I managed to find a recovery CD for this model and reformatted the hardrive, but now i'm back to the same problem of the computer freezing whenever the wireless network is switched on.

The machine is 2 years old... I could theoretically download new Bios but it would have to be to something external like a cd or flashdrive, because the laptop essentially freezes whenever I switch on the wireless card. Would you happen to have any recommendations on where to find these updates online?

The BIOS update can be found here (from Toshiba):

    http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/...gkfkegcgfkceghdgngdgmn.0&ct=DL&all_docs=false

But the fix log doesn't mention your issue so this won't help.

EDIT: This is the driver download site for your model. I suggest unistalling the wireless card via the device manager and reinstalling it with a driver from this site.

Correct, it only freezes when the wireless card is switched on. I'm pretty you're right and it's a hardware issue (since reformatting didn't help), but it wouldn't hurt to reinstall the drivers from the site that Greg mentioned first. Should that fail, I plan on buying a new pci card which should hopefully fix everything once installed. Should that fail, then i'm going to take the darn thing in and diagnose it professionally. Thanks for all the help you two!

Have you tried removing the wireless card?
