Hi I was wondering if people who have this laptop can help. I'm currently torn between the Toshiba Satellite L670 and the Dell Inspiron 17R.

    Could the following be answered?

    1) Sound quality. I have heard the Toshiba speakers in a store and they were quiet and for me this is a potential deal breaker. Overall what is the sound quality like and is it loud?

    2) Is there a typing issue with the hand brushing the trackpad and causing the cursor to move around, its a bug bear with me.

    3) Fan noise. I really hate a loud fan or continuous fan being on a laptop. Is it an issue for the Toshiba. Does it have a problem managing its heat? This is a potential deal breaker for me.

    4) I wasn't too keen on the trackpad buttons due to their noise, but they gave good feedback, but is there any issues with its reliability?

    5) General build quality. What's it like to live with. I noticed a bit of flexing between the bottom of the trackpad buttons and the edge of the chassis and I thought it was a bit of a let down given that the rest of the laptop seemed well built. Any issues with reliability?

    Thanks.

I bought a Satellite L650 about a week ago, it is a 15.6'', but overall the laptops should be similar.

    1) the sound was low probably because of default settings in the speaker properties. you can turn it much louder. but the speakers are definitely sub-par, so I use external speakers.

    2) haven't noticed that, but I usually turn my touchpad off and use a mouse.
now that I've tried it, you could coincidently brush the touchpad while typing, but you can learn to avoid it pretty quickly.

3)my fan does seem a bit loud if you are in a very quiet room, if there's any sort of background noise, it's not audible. But that might be different with the 17'' version.

    4)works fine here

5)build quality in general is quite good if you consider the price, it's not as well built as an ENVY 17, but I think overall the build is around the level of other notebooks in its price range.
overall haven't noticed any bending or flexing or motherboards coming loose.

    hope this helps.
    good luck.

Thanks for the reply. I went again to the store and was impressed with the build quality. Its definately a strong contender, if the temps are low on a 17 inch model.

PS - What processor are you using. I did a quick check of vents and i5 laptops generally were quite hot compared to i3's. I think a i3 and intel GPU is the way to keep the temps low.

    I have an i5-430M and a dedicated MR 5650.
generally the temps aren't much of a problem, but the fan has to work almost constantly, even if your'e just surfing the web. I suppose if you work in a quiet room that may be a bit annoying, but even if you got the AC on then you won't hear the fan much.

If you don't care about a slightly slower processor then i3 should be good enough.

oh and btw I may be wrong about the speakers, the settings I used to turn up the volume were for external speakers. They really are not that powerful and not such a good quality. good enough for quiet music, not for movies or heavy metal.
