hello all i just had a question regarding the m100's fan..one of the reviews said that the fan that it comes with is really loud, and is on most of the time. I am about to buy this laptop and i was wondering if anyone else had an experience like this. And if anyone owns this laptop to please post a review, i would like to know more about the keyboard, battery life, touchpad, screen, bulkiness(because it kind of looks thick in the picture), weight, performance etc . i was going to wait it out for dell's e1405 but i just can't any longer...im frustrated w/their slow release times. Oh yea and if you all have any pictures of what the laptop looks like with the mist grey cover if you could please post it. I think that is all for now. Thank you ahead of time..this will be my first laptop and i want to get it right. :)
OH yea one more thing. i was wondering if i bought the 12 cell battery instead, does it stick out of the laptop, or is it the same size as the 6 cell....is it heavier??(im pretty sure its heavier...my main concern is if it sticks out)

    prospective laptop:
    Intel core duo 2.1 ghz
im going to get 1X 256mb and then buy 2gigs 667mhz elsewhere
    bluetooth
    80 gb 5400rpm
    intel wireless
    14.1" Diagonal Widescreen XGA TruBrite™ display (1280x768)
    ATI Mobility™ Radeon® X1300 with 64MB DDR SDRAM
    harman/kardon® stereo speakers
Lithium Ion Battery (12-cell) or 6cell (not sure yet)

    cheers,
    jay

I don't have any personal experience with the M100, but if you buy a 12 cell it will stick out, and prop up the back a bit. I would say that a 6-cell should last about 1:30-2:00 and a 12 cell should double that, if battery time is a concern for you. It is essentially 2-6 cell batteries and the weight will show that, about twice as heavy.

I have a canadian m100, with T2300 dual core. Well, so far it's really quiet (i bought m50 for 2 weeks, before replacing it with m100, 2 weeks staples refund policy :) ) anyhow, i would say that m100 runs cooler (esp at the palm area) and quieter compare to m50. In general, without comparing it to m50, I'd say, it's a quiet laptop.

Also, don't even bother getting the 2.16GHz chip. Save the money and get the 2.0Ghz because the difference is negligible unless you're constantly using 100% of your processor. At the very least, take the money you save on the 2.0GHz, and upgrade to the x1400 video card. The 1300 is a waste of money.

The X1300 is only 64MB to my knowledge - the X1400 is 128MB however.

Do you guys know if it would be possible to buy the M100 with integrated intel gpu and then later on upgrade it to dedicated video? I am new to laptops so this may have an obvious answer, but I don't know it.

Hey I'm Canadian too and I was wondering, where did you buy it from? (toshiba.ca?)

I looked there and they didn't let me customize it, and it comes with INTEGRATED GRAPHICS

Did you manage to get a dedicated graphics card? (X1300, X1400?)

    Thanks moko!

Nope, you can't upgrade your video card.

Interested in the opinion about the fan as well... Anyone with the ability to offer input, please do. The one comment jay mentioned is indeed disturbing. (I already returned the last laptop, Acer TM3002, because of noise issues). I don't mind a noisy optical drive, but when the computer isn't doing much, it really shouldn't be making much fan noise.

Also, has anyone experienced underclocking with RM Clock, on Core Duos?

My fan seems to be off most of the time and turns on every now and then for a few seconds. Last night I started noticing a sound coming from the left side of my keyboard, it sort of sounds like a rattle. I think it might be the fan spinning down, but it doesn't happen every time. I don't know what else would be moving around in there on the left side to cause a weird noise except for the fan. Any ideas?

It sounds kind of like something is rolling around in there but I know nothing is. It has to be the fan. Weird.

I've had the m100 for several days now. No real issue with my fan. I really think it's a terrific laptop at a great price. I've got the 2.0, ati x1400, 1 gig ram, etc...

As far as Fan/Heat is concerned, the fan runs most of the time but is very quiet. When doing graphic or processor intensive tasks the fan kicks up faster and louder but I don't find it annoying. I'd rather have the fan do it's job than have components fail prematutrely due to heat build up. Every component has what they call MTBF rating. (mean time before failure). This rating is in hours. Excessive heat can drastically lowers the MTBF. So I say let the fan run! The right side of the palm rest gets a little warm but never hot. At no time do I find it bothersome but thats just my opinion. Don't know if that helps.
